TechPoint Foundation for Youth is a nonprofit agency dedicated to inspiring girls, minorities, and kids from low-income backgrounds through hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. The proceeds from this event support the work they do with underserved students throughout Indiana.
Everyone's a Star Wars fan on May 4th, right? This is the third year for this family-friendly celebration. Your ticket covers food, Sun King Brewing Company beer, lightsaber training with the Indy Lightsaber Academy, appearances by Star Wars Indiana costumed characters, live space-themed chalk art installation by Ben Glenn, air brush tattoos, caricatures, fun games and activities, and more! Visit the TechPoint Foundation website to purchase tickets and more info.
I was fascinated to learn about the Star Wars Indiana folks - what a cool organization! Visit www.bloodfingarrison.com to see for yourself.

Christos Koutsouras' "Land Art" opening reception
Friday, May 4, 2018
Tube Factory artspace
1125 Cruft St.
all-ages, free, 6 - 10 pm,
Christos Koutsouras' upcoming show at Tube Factory artspace is rooted in a place very special to him. The work in this show is inspired by the huge fire that tore apart his birthplace on the island of Samos, Greece. He first approached the theme in 1994 after a fire destroyed much of the vegetation on the island and again in 2016 when a rampant blaze took thousands of hectares of pine forest.
When Samos was subjected to the massive fire two years ago, Christos saw it as an opportunity to finish the work he started 20 years ago. He envisions the white trees he has painted juxtaposed with the black landscape as a visual reference to the act of fire.
Land Art is made up primarily of large scale photography manipulated by Christos in different ways. Some pieces are painted on, others drawn upon with pencil, and some left intact. The work captures the destruction and rebirth of the forests and fields of Samos from fires that swept through the landscape.
In a second element to the exhibition, Christos paints the charred trees white to contrast with the blackness of the burned landscape. Other works were produced by wrapping paper around the burned trees of Samos and rubbing charcoal imprints.
Christos is truly an international artist and I'm thrilled that he occasionally calls Indianapolis his home. The show will hang through July 14.

David Amram in concert
Friday, May 11, 2018
The Jazz Kitchen
5377 College Ave. - 21+, two shows 6 & 9:30 pm, $36 - 46
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the Dan Wakefield and David Amram show last year. I could listen to them tell stories all day long and hearing David play music was icing on the cake.
David Amram is such an interesting man and talented musician and has had more adventures than you can imagine. It took me almost a year to read his biography, Upbeat: Nine Lives of a Musical Cat. It is so dense with stories of musical accomplishments and iconic friends that I had to absorb it in chunks. Of course, the stories of hanging out with Dan and Jack Kerouac and Hunter Thompson are fun to read, but mostly I was blown away by David's detailed memory, the book was a great peek into many behind the scenes moments in his illustrious life.
David is a pioneer of Jazz French horn, has composed hundreds of works, and is a multi-instrumentalist. He's a master of improvising and musical surprises and glee. Seriously, joy radiates from him.
Dan Wakefield will also chatting with David for a special edition of Uncle Dan's Story Hour at the Aristocrat on Thursday, May 10. For details on tickets for that event and The Jazz Kitchen shows and a special combo ticket, visit danwakefield.com.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
