Sertoma Presents Prestigious Awards To Two Area Residents
by Alan Hague
posted: Feb. 02, 2018

Fred Winters and Jay Abbott, both of Carmel, recently were honored by the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple. Sertoma (SERvice TO MANkind) raises funds which are donated to various charities within the Indianapolis area.
Mr. Winters was named the Sertoman of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the Club during this past year. Fred joined the club in 2006. He has served on the National Heritage Essay Contest committee, eventually became President of the Club, and then Chairman of the Board. Under his leadership, the club has been instrumental in finding new sources of funds for their fund-raising efforts, increasing membership, and enhancing the club's strategic planning.
Fred received an MBA from Indiana University. He served in the Air Force where he learned to be an interpreter of Russian. Fred worked at Eli Lilly and Company in the Human Resources Group for 34 years and eventually became a director in the company.
Fred has been a strong supporter of the community and currently sits on the Board of Directors for Noble of Indiana. He has been active in three capital campaigns in his church and is a member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Fund Raising Committee. Fred receives accolades from his wife, Jacquie, and his family as being a loving husband, great dad and grandfather and a very caring individual.
Mr. Jay Abbott was presented with the Service to Mankind Award. Jay is the Special Agent-in-Charge (SAC) of the FBI's Indianapolis Division. Jay has been with the FBI for over 30 years and oversees 10 offices in Indiana, with over 300 employees.
Although expressing a desire to play competitive tennis in his early years, he instead obtained his Judicial Doctorate at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He subsequently joined the FBI and held many leadership positions throughout the world.
Mr. Abbott has always endeavored to lead by 'building trust' with all those with whom he interacts. This can sometimes be difficult in an organization as complex as the FBI. Jay has been assigned to a variety of Foreign Counterintelligence and International Terrorism matters and was also a member of the SWAT Team, a Firearms Instructor and a Tactical Instructor.
Jay has received numerous awards and citations for his many accomplishments, including the Washington, D.C. Federal Bar Association Outstanding Law Enforcement Service Award, and is a member of the SAC's Advisory Committee with advises the Director of the FBI.
Jay will be retiring from the FBI at the end of January and is ready to devote time to his wife, Jackie, and family; a family that has sacrificed much for Jay to follow his FBI adventure.
