Buzzing Around Town

Happy New Year lovely readers! If the extended forecast was correct, it's darn cold outside as you're reading this. Here are a few ways to warm your heart and your toes in upcoming weeks.

Eighth Annual Year in Review Quiz
Tuesday, January 9, 2018
Broad Ripple Brew Pub
842 E. 56th Street
all-ages, 7 pm, free
I'm going to brag. I was on the winning quiz team last month, although my biggest contribution was being able to identify area churches and their festivals from photographs - staying true to my Catholic roots and love of church festivals. You can find Quizmaster Billy's previous month's quiz questions and answers in this paper.
If you'd like to play, gather your team or form one from folks at the pub. There is also a prize for the best team name, so be thinking of one. This is a special year end edition, the quiz is typically held on the last Tuesday of the month - mark your brand new shiny calendar for Tuesday, January 30 also.

Clownvis Presley
Sunday, January 14, 2018
Historic Melody Inn
3826 Illinois Street
21+, doors 7 pm, $8 advance
Elvis Presley impersonator clown? Yes, please! LA Weekly called Clownvis Presley "Better than the real Elvis." You might recognize Clownvis from a contentious turn on America's Got Talent or from Comedy Central or viral videos or just about anywhere. His show combines magic, comedy, and music. Sure to be a great time!

Big Head Todd and the Monsters
Tuesday, January 16, 2018
The Vogue
6259 N. College Avenue
21+, doors 6:30, show 7:30 pm, $27 - 30
The Vogue is celebrating 40 years as a music venue and Big Head Todd and the Monsters are in their 34th year as a band. I know I've seen Big Head Todd at the Vogue several times over the years. I'm glad the band is still touring and that The Vogue is still hosting live music.
When the band was here last year they did double duty that day, playing in the Super Bowl parade in Denver and at The Vogue that night. They have written music at the request of Space Shuttle astronauts and their songs have been featured everywhere from presidential campaigns to feature films. They have something for everyone - rock, blues, and jam tunes.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
