Billy Nightshade Night
Saturday, June 24, 2017
State Street Pub
234 N. State St - 21+, $?, 8 pm - 1 am
My wild crush on punk icon Billy Nightshade (Daryl Frazier) started in 1979 and every time I saw him since then I still got blushy and giggly. I had a party in 2003 the night before Dow Jones and the Industrials and the Gizmos played a memorial show at Radio Radio and the only thing running through my head was "Billy Nightshade is in my backyard, Billy Nightshade is in my backyard, Billy Nightshade is in my backyard!"
Billy lived in his home-state of Minnesota and died unexpectedly on April 1st.
He was a bass player for the Gizmos and shared vocals and songwriting duties in the band. Billy had great stage presence, was smart, funny, and kind.
This show is tribute and celebration of Billy's life. Participating will be surviving Gizmos members Dale Lawrence, Tim Carroll, and Shadow Myers; Greg Horn (of Dow Jones and the Industrials); Frankie Camaro; John Barge (Panics, Walking Ruins); Last Four (4) Digits; and more.
Bring your memories and be prepared to dance. All proceeds will be donated to diabetes research.

Old 97's
Thursday, July 6, 2017
The Vogue
6259 N. College Ave - 21+, $22, doors 8 pm, show 9 pm
The Old 97's - who have gone back and forth about the apostrophe use in their band name - they're pro-apostrophe at the time of this writing - are hailed as pioneers in the alt-country movement in the late 1990s. Rhett Miller (primary songwriter and lead vocalist) describes their style as "loud folk." They are on tour in honor of their latest album, "Graveyard Whistling."
The band still boasts the original four members and puts on a great show. I first saw the Old 97's at The Vogue in 2004 and don't I think I've missed one of their shows here since then. I'll see you there!

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
