Residents hold meeting about river at WRYC
posted: Sept. 30, 2016

Residents concerned about the health of the White River recently held a meeting at the White River Yacht Club. Over 150 interested residents attended. There were several speakers at the meeting organized by Pat Riley. This meeting did not reach any conclusions or offer much hope of a path to fixing some of the problems with White River. Each speaker told of the long and expensive road that can be taken.
The first to speak about the river was Bruno Pigott, Chief of Staff at Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). Pigott explained that during the boat tour of the river to assess problems, he saw that the White River, north of the yacht club, is becoming shallower and shallower due to sedimentation build up. There is also milfoil and algae growth. Silt buildup can be a result of construction near the river anywhere upstream, even as far away as Anderson. Algae grows faster when the water is shallower and thus heats more from the sun. Nutrients from fertilizer runoff due to upstream farming also contributes to algae blooms.

Developer Winston Knauss shared his experiences at the river meeting.

Next was Steve Summerlot, Engineering Project Manager at Citizens Energy Group. He discussed the projects of dredging Geist and the canal to fight silt and milfoil growth, explaining that it is a difficult and expensive process.
Brandon Herget, Deputy State Director for United States Senator Joe Donnelly, spoke briefly about the Senator's work in supporting past river and waterway projects.
Kathy Andrey, resident, shared her story of attempting to get a grant to remedy the river in 2014. The grant was not selected for funding.
Winston Knauss, resident and developer, discussed his history of working with regulators on river projects.
The Gazette will follow up on this effort by residents to restore the White River to previous depth and flow.
