Dow Jones and the Industrials
Indiana Punk History Talk and Concert
Friday, September 16, 2016
State Street Pub
243 State Street - 21+, doors 8 PM/show 9 PM, $5
The iconic art-punk band, Dow Jones and the Industrials are reuniting to celebrate the release of their much-anticipated anthology Can't Stand The Midwest. I've been obsessively listening to my copy of the album this week.
From 1979 to 1981 the Industrials were a huge part of Indiana punk scene - and my introduction to independent music. Their technology-driven manic music is the stuff that legends are made of. I was lucky enough to meet the band in 1979 when Chris Clark was voted president of the Purdue student body and I was an uber-shy freshman sneaking into the student government offices to use the typewriter.
The panel: 40 YEARS LATER: THE ROOTS OF INDIANA PUNK AND THE RISE OF GULCHER
Who was the first Indiana punk band? How did Gulcher Records begin? Why are there two (or three?) versions of the Gizmos? Who were the Chinaboise, Cerberus, Retarded Godz or Skunts? Why do people still care? Hear from a panel including 1976 Gizmo and fanzine legend Eddie Flowers, 1978 Gizmo and author Dale Lawrence, DJI's Greg Horn, Hoosier music historian Rick Wilkerson, Yara Cluver of the Panics, and more! Moderated by Eric Weddle and featuring a slide show with dozens of Keith Smith's never-before-seen punk scene photos from the 1970s and '80s, rare fliers, ephemera and more.
The music: This reformed band features original members Greg Horn, Chris Clark and a "technologically enhanced appearance" by Mr. Science, plus Mike Thisshow and Vess von Ruhtenberg.

The new season of the Indy Folk Series is starting off on a lovely note with these three excellent songwriters. They met around a campfire at the Kerrville Folk Festival and have been harmonizing and swapping songs ever since.
The Indy Folk Series is an all-ages listening room venue featuring superb acoustics, art on the walls, and candles on the tables. Concerts are held once a month, September - May, in the performance space at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis. Light refreshments, including a variety of beverages, available prior to the concert and during intermission.
Visit their website for the full series lineup.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
