Right in my Own Backyard - Get Ready. . . Rivi's Annual Dog Swim - by Brandt Carter

Get Ready. . . Rivi's Annual Dog Swim

It one of my most favorite times of the year! . . .the end of summer. The days are getting shorter, the heat is subsiding, kids are back in school, and the pools are closing. That means, Dogs Get To Swim!
Riviera Club is opening its pool for the dogs. Located at 56th and Illinois, it is in Broad Ripple's backyard. It is my childhood swim club that has activities all year round, but their summer pool closes Sunday, September 11− sad for the swimmers but great for the dogs. The dog swim is 5:30 to 7:00pm. The pups will have free reign of the pool and will enjoy diving, wading, and swimming. Member dog is $5 and non member dog is $10. This best part of the event is that all proceeds go to benefit some great dog nonprofit organizations.
Celebrating the canine work in Indy, Riviera is donating to FACE, Waldo's Muttley Crew, and Canine Companions for Independence. FACE is a fantastic, local low-cost Spay Neuter Clinic that also helps re-home homeless animals. They provide a needed service for Marion County so we can keep the unwanted animal population in check. Waldo's Muttley Crew is a foster animal rescue with the mission of saving animals from poor environments, neglect, and kill shelters. They accept strays and dogs from owner who can no longer keep them. Canine Companions for Independence is the service dog program that I raise puppies for. They breed, raise, and train exceptional dogs that enhance the lives of people with disabilities. They say some angels have wings, others have tails. Canine Companions trains four types of assistance dogs: Service Dogs, Skilled Companions, Hearing Dogs and Facility Dogs.
If you don't know much about the Riviera Club ("Rivi"), it was founded and incorporated on 1933 by Indianapolis businessman Mr. James H. Makin. A later note from their history:
"In August of 1950, the Club purchased additional property. It now consists of 27 acres that play host to 4 outdoor pools, 2 indoor pools, 14 tennis courts, a gym and an enclosed picnic house along with the Clubhouse with the fitness center and ballroom/dining rooms. The main outdoor pool is one of the largest in the country, larger than a football field, and holds 1,290,000 gallons of water. On a hot, busy day over 50,000 gallons can evaporate. The main pool also contains a 5-lane 50 meter course, a 5-lane 50 yard course, and a 5-lane 25 yard course. A diving tank with underwater windows was added in 1950."
This event is open to the public. Please note the facilities are accessible. I would really like you to come out and meet our service dogs and representatives from FACE and Waldo's. If inclement weather, check with Rivi.
