Buzzing Around Town

ROC & ROW
Labor Day Monday, September 5, 2016
Broad Ripple Park, 1550 Broad Ripple Ave
all-ages, free, 10 AM - 8 PM
ROC & ROW (Reconnecting to Our Communities by Reconnecting to Our Waterways) is borne from WARMfest. The family-focused event features live music, the Indy Urban Flea, yoga, bar service, food trucks and on-the-water activities.
While ROC & ROW is free to attend, donations are welcome and will benefit the Carl G. Fisher Society. The Carl G. Fisher Society (CGFS) has a vision to restore and promote the White River to return it to the grandeur of a century ago. Its mission is to educate the community to envision this great river as a recreational and visually-appealing natural resource. For generations Broad Ripple Park and the waterway has been the source of entertainment and family fun and they aim to bring that decades-old tradition back to life on Labor Day.
Music includes: The Ark Band, Hero Jr., 3:1 & Friends, sugar moon rabbit, Broken Growlers, and Ruditoonz. Activities include: yoga, INDYBalance workshops, Indy Urban Flea vendor market, wellness fair, and more.

Wilco "Schmilco" Listening Party
Tuesday, September 6, 2016
LUNA music - 5202 N. College Ave
Indy CD & Vinyl - 806 Broad Ripple Ave
all-ages, free, 6 PM
We're lucky enough to have two independent record stores in our neighborhood and both LUNA music and Indy CD & Vinyl are offering us the first listen of Wilco's new record, Schmilco. This is the first chance to listen to and purchase the record.
Wilco is one of my favorite rock bands. Wilco was formed in 1994 from the ashes of the alt-country band, Uncle Tupelo and hails from Chicago. Give 'em a listen, you'll like them too!
Both stores will have giveaways, including slipmats, posters, stickers and other goodies.

French Market
Saturday, September 10, 2016
St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church
4217 Central Ave - all-ages, free, noon - 10:00 PM
French Market grew from a parish picnic to an amazing festival in the last 26 years. One thing has stayed constant in that time - the commitment to quality French cuisine. Each dish is taste-tested - I was part of the bread tasting committee - for quality and value. Second Helpings and Ivy Tech culinary students work along side of parishioners to prepare the food, with additional items made by the Jazz Kitchen and The Food Guys Catering.
Food offerings include quiche, escargot, oysters, mussels, cheese and fruit, rotisserie chicken, Tarte Flambé white Alsatian pizza, beef bourguignon, Crawfish Etouffee, crab cakes, pommes frites and ratatouille. French dip roast beef sandwiches, Chicken Provencal sandwiches and BBQ ribs will also be available. Desserts include beignets, cheesecake, cream puffs, éclairs, chocolate mousse and Madeleines. And there is bake sale in the school gymnasium so you can take some goodies home! Drinks include sweet tea, beer, and wine.
The festival also features children's games and kiddo-friendly food until 5:00 p.m.
The musical lineup is:
Fernando Tarango and the Wickersham Brothers from noon to 2:00 p.m.
The Tides from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m.
Frenchaxe 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Toy Factory from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
5:30 p.m. Mass will be celebrated in French by Father Michael Hoyt (who grew up in Meridian-Kessler) in the historic 1929 church.
Dozens of artisans will be setting up booths, offering artwork, jewelry, apparel and religious items for sale.
And since it's a church festival you know there will be a raffle! Prizes include $1000 cash, two prizes of $500, a quilt made and donated by Pat Crossland, Electra Cruiser Men's and Women's Bikes donated by Bike Line, a Euro-Style Scooter, an iPhone watch, 2 Colts Tickets with a tailgate picnic for two by the Pawn Shop Pub, and 2 Colts tickets with access to a suite.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
