Buzzing Around Town

Hello gang! There is so much to do in this two weeks that I'm not sure when I'll sleep. . . or work, for that matter. Don't forget that the Indiana State Fair is happening now and it is chock full of music and fun. Here's a sampling of other great things to do.

Broad Ripple Carnival Celebrating Indiana's Bicentennial
August 11 - 14, 2016
Broad Ripple Park
1550 Broad Ripple Ave
all-ages, free, Thursday & Friday 4 - 9 pm, Saturday noon - 9 pm, Sunday 11 am - 4 pm
I'm sure we've all seen the wonderful photographs from the 1900s depicting Broad Ripple Park as an amusement park complete with a roller coaster, log ride, bumper cars, beach, petting zoo, and carnival games.
The history of Broad Ripple and the Indiana Bicentennial will be celebrated with a four-day festival in the park, featuring carnival rides and games, food and drink, a craft beer garden, live entertainment and community booths. Sunday will feature an artisan and vintage market.
The days are jam packed with yoga, pet adoption, storytelling, and much more. Here is a peek at a bit of the music: Friday: 6:30 pm, The Funk Quarter. Saturday: 6:00 pm, Steve Kennan. 7:30 pm, Chad Mills

Indy Folk Fest
Saturday, August 13, 2016
Indy Hostel
4905 Winthrop Ave
Folk Fest Finale at the Vogue (21+)
all-ages, noon - 11 pm, $10 presale (ages 10 and under free)
The family-friendly Indy Folk Fest at Indy Hostel is always a delightful day of music and community. This year the big finale moves up the street to the Vogue.
There will be gobs of local musicians - including Bigfoot Yancey, Sarah Grain, and Punkin' Holler Boys. Upland beer, and food vendors. Festival goers are encouraged to bike to the event and bring chairs and blankets. Ample bike parking will be available - Indy Hostel is right off of the Monon Trail.
The voice of independent radio, WITT 91.9, and Kids First Inc. are the benefiting from the event. Other organizations that will be represented include Indiana Earth Charter, Kids Peace Inc., and Keystone-Monon Community Garden.
The Folk Fest Finale will be hosted by The Vogue Theater and is free to all festival goers with their wristband. Hyrider and Flatland Harmony Experiment will play at 10 pm.

Saffire-The Uppity Blues Women: Revisited
Sunday, August 14, 2016
Jazz Kitchen
5377 N College Ave
21+, 7 - 10 pm, $20
Oh my goodness, this show will be an absolute blast! I can't remember when it was that I saw Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women play at the Music Mill - 2008-ish, maybe? I am forever grateful to Maureen Cox for suggesting that I go. The band is great fun and made up of very talented women.
The Uppity Blues Women retired in 2009 and we were lucky that band member, Andra Faye, landed in Indianapolis. Their fans have been clamoring for a reunion show, but they have declined, especially after the death of piano player, Ann Radson. The band was coaxed into playing the Cincinnati Blues Festival this year and added Indianapolis to the tiny reunion tour. Yay, us!
Gaye Adegbalola (vocals, guitar) and Andra Faye (vocals, bass, mandolin, violin, guitar) will be joined by Cheryl Renee, a talented singer and pianist from Cincinnati, who I hear has just the right amount of sass to handle the mix of classic, slightly-naughty, and original blues songs the band is known for.
Scott Ballantine and Andra Faye will play a short opening set.

SausageFest
Friday, August, 19 & Saturday, 20, 2016
St. Thomas Aquinas Church
4600 Illinois Street
all-ages, free, Friday 6 pm - midnight, Saturday 5:30 pm - midnight
I can't believe that this is the 12th St. Thomas Aquinas SausageFest! I haven't missed one yet and I've got quite a tee shirt collection to prove it. The festival features lovely beer from Sun King brewery and delicious sausage from Kincaid's Meat Market. Other local vendors provide deserts, food offerings, and wine.
Activities for young guests include inflatables things to bounce on, games, cake walks, and face painting. New this year: a back lot party featuring School of Rock musicians for the teens. Don't worry parents, chaperons will be provided.
Music lineup:
Friday, August 19, 2016
5:45 Fabulous SausageKings
6:30 Scarlet Water
7:30 Turnipseeds
8:30 Midtown Mad Men
9:45 Streaker

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
