Food composting pick up now offered
Did you know if you lived in Seattle or San Diego you would have to separate out your food waste for recycling before the City would pick it up? The city gives you a separate bin for food waste.
Now Green with Indy is offering a service here locally.

For $10 a week, the private company will pick up your food waste at curbside. 17 quart kitchen food waste bins and compostable bag liners are available to secure food waste until collected. Bins are $20 each. Bags are $10 per box.
Things that can be composted include coffee grounds, eggshells, grass clippings, kitchen food waste scraps, fresh weeds, compostable utensils, to-go supplies, paper napkins, pet and human hair, expired flower arrangements, theater tickets, and more). Recycle food waste and green the block.
For more information, go to www.greenwithindy.com. You can find them at the Farmers Market as well every Saturday.

Garden/produce shop thrives despite surrounding changes
Johnny's Market on College Avenue now affronts the new Coil Apartment/grocery store complex. I stopped by the other day to get some flowers for my courtyard garden and inquired about their future.
"We're staying," said Mary Dueser of Johnny's.

In addition to flowers, they again are selling produce (much of it local) through mid-September. (I'm waiting for the Indiana Decker melons, a super sweet cantaloupe).
Indeed, they expect the new 151 apartment complex to increase their business.
Johnny's will remain open as it always does through mid-September and then re-open to sell pumpkins and Christmas trees.
BR is blessed to have two great locally owned garden stores (Weaver's being the other one.)
Shop local and don't miss the Decker melons.

Labor Day race moved to October
Do you like participating in the Ripple Effect Run held in the late afternoon the Sunday before Labor Day? The race is being moved to October given that many people go away for the Labor Day holiday according to BRVA President Kent Springer.

Bus routes feature better frequencies
Did you hate waiting an hour for the next bus if you missed your bus?
BR residents now don't have to. Service is now three times an hour during rush hour.
The #17 bus now runs from the Village more often for the inbound during morning commutes. It no longer has a different route for half the buses which used to use Kessler.
The #18 bus now goes to Butler before heading downtown so you have two routes to choose from.
Here's an example for someone who works downtown and lives in the Village:
  • 18 lv 7 ar 7:35am
  • 17 lv 7:19 ar 7:50
  • 17 lv 7:49 ar 8:20
  • 18 lv 8:00 ar 8:35
  • 17 lv 8:19 ar 8:50
  • 18 lv 8:30 ar 9:05
The news is even better coming from downtown as the annoying 20-minute loop around downtown has been eliminated.
Here's a sample of routings back to the Ripple between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.:
  • 17 lv 4:30 ar 5:03pm
  • 18 lv 4:45 ar 5:22
  • 17 lv 5:00 ar 5:33
  • 18 lv 5:15 ar 5:52
  • 17 lv 5:30 ar 6:03
  • 18 lv 5:45 ar 6:20
  • 17 lv 6:00 ar 6:31
Note the #18 now goes to Butler on the way to and from downtown so mid-town no longer has bus service on Pennsylvania Avenue as the #18 instead heads to Butler University.
See the details at www.indygo.net. Note all routes go to the new Transit Center.
