BR Art Fair - a nearly perfect weekend of art - By Melissa Kidulas

The Broad Ripple art fair was back at it again this year, celebrating the arts on Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22, 2016, at the grounds of the Indianapolis Art Center on 67th and College Ave.
Saturday morning started off covered in puddles and a tad overcast, but the weather brightened up as busloads of people rolled up to the fair. There were over 225 artists displaying original work. The art fair had it all-from canvas paintings to birdcages; from drawings to decorative doorbells; or hand-bound notebooks to hand-bound notebook necklaces. The artwork wasn't just visual. There were also a number of live bands offering their groovy sounds, and food vendors providing a tasty lunch and free smells.
Art lovers from across the nation traveled here to share their work. "I drove here straight from North Carolina, just for this event," said Dave Goldman, an oil painter. Many of Goldman's oil paintings depicted seascapes and open skies-typical scenery from the beautiful east coast. It was evident that several artists from faraway brought their hometown charisma with them.
Marcos Bautista, a weaver, brought his creations all the way from Oaxaca, Mexico. He offered artisan rugs and handbags with patterns inspired by traditional forms and images of Oaxaca. "Everyone in my town made rugs," he said. "I started when I was 9 years old." As of one year ago Bautista is an Indianapolis resident, continuing to create and share his culture with the US.
In contrast, there were dozens of Indianapolis natives attending the fair. For example, illustrator David Frohbieter contributed his "historically inaccurate illustrations." He claims, "Art takes itself too seriously sometimes." Consequently, his paintings consisted of alien abductions over the Coliseum and monsters attacking Monument Circle.
One particular Indy native has been in the Broad Ripple Art Fair since its very first occasion, 46 years ago. This art fair veteran goes by the name of K.P. Singh. He creates architectural drawings of historical buildings and places of worship. At the first fair, he sold his work in a friend's booth. "At that time, the art fair was by the canal," Singh explained. "I lined up six of my pieces on the curb, and sold everything that day."
He and his son Robbie haven't missed a fair since. "Over the years, the art show has grown in size, stature, and beauty. In so many ways, it's more than just fine art. It's a presentation of art itself," he said. "It's been a joy to see it evolve and grow. And I've grown with it." Over the past 46 years, Singh's illustrations have traveled far and wide across the planet, with their origin being from his little grassy booth in Broad Ripple.
The art fair had some fantastic experienced artists, but just like K.P. Singh, they all had to start somewhere. This year was Jessica Green's first art show. . . ever. She's a painter who specializes in Indianapolis downtown architecture. "Since 2012, I've been on a mission to paint 500 paintings," Green said. As of now, she's completed somewhere around 350. Although new to the scene, Green's talent has proved itself worthy. We look forward to seeing what Green has in store for next year, along with all the other artists that came to celebrate this artsy weekend.
