Can it be Race Weekend?
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway makes history this year with the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. You can't pack glass beverages in your coolers so maybe it's time to give wine in a can a try. Sofia sparkling wine in a can from Coppola Winery is excellent. Off dry with tiny bubbles. West Side Wine Company out of California offers four packs in Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon. The company recently found shelf space at Whole Foods markets. Many Indiana craft beer makers serve their brew in cans. None is more appropriate than Flat 12 Bierwerks smooth snappy Pilsner in a can "Hinchtown Hammerdown" brewed in partnership with James Hinchcliffe who holds the pole for the race on May 29th.
If you're not going to the race but are firing up the grill to BBQ and listen to the historic running on the radio or web instead (or this year on TV!), I've got a great bottle to enjoy from a California winery that is also celebrating a big anniversary this year. Conundrum White debuted 25 years ago turning palates with its exotic blend of grapes that left wine lovers wanting more of its softly sweet spicy smooth self. This year the Wagner family debuts Conundrum Red a bold juicy chewy blend that offers up mocha, plum and dark red fruit. It's a big dry wine perfect for burgers, ribs and smoked meats. It comes screw-capped for ease of serving and can be slightly chilled if the cook gets too hot in the kitchen. Great value and widely available.
