Thanks to a news tip from Hardwickes Tobacco about new taxi zone signs being installed along the south side of Broad Ripple Avenue, the Gazette started investigating. We discovered that an additional 21 parking spots on the Avenue had been lost to visitors after 9pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The taxi-only zone now includes every meter between College and Guilford. After 9pm on Thursday-Saturday any cars parked there will be towed. This new wave included three ADA spaces. The Gazette pointed this out to the City and the signs were removed from those three meters.

Businesses we talked to still feel that the other 18 lost parking spots will drive visitors into the neighborhood to park, a situation deemed as both a public safety issue and a neighborhood nuisance issue by previous parking studies. The total number of meters dedicated to taxis is now 36 between College and Guilford, 18 on the north and 18 on the south.

The Broad Ripple Village Association stated, "The meters on the North side of BR Avenue have been designated for taxis for a number of years, maybe 10. The South side was approved by City-County Council 27-2 back in April, based on the increased use of Ubers that have increased the number of pickups and dropoffs on the Ave on weekends. IMPD has mentioned the confusion and chaos that the uptick has caused and their desire to park their vehicles on the side of the street rather than in the middle of it."
