Buzzing Around Town

One Voice, One Guitar Competition
Fridays, through November 20, 2015
Birdy's Live
2131 E. 71st Street - 21+, $5, doors 8:00 PM
It is a great premise - one voice and one guitar. Seriously, just one guitar. Each musician play will the same Taylor guitar throughout the seven weeks of competition. The show is focused on just the performer and the songs they want to share. No band or pyrotechnics or pedals. One guitar and one musician.
Each week three performers advance to the next round. By my calculation the competitions will be happening each Friday, through November 20, but my math could be wrong.
The lineup for October 16th is:
Michael Pearson 8:30pm
Brad Kleinschmidt 9pm
Chris Wolf 9:30pm
Jeff Kelly 10pm
Danni McPherron 10:30pm
Mike Boo 11pm
CL James 11:30pm

Paul Holdman and friends
Friday, October 23, 2015
Jazz Kitchen
5377 N. College Ave - 21+, 7:30 and 9:00 PM, $12
What an all-star lineup this is! Paul Holdman released his most excellent album, In the Hands of God, this April and has gathered the lovely musicians who played on the record for a show at the Jazz Kitchen. The performers are: Paul Holdman, Jennie DeVoe, Tad Robinson, Rebekah Meldrum, Jeff Chapin, and David Murray. I would go see any of the musicians individually in concert - to have them all on one stage will be extra-special.
The band will be performing the music from Paul's album, as well as some special songs from each of the singers. As always there is a great menu (with a Second Helpings grad in the kitchen) and stellar cocktails.

Freda Love Smith book release: Red Velvet Underground
Sunday, October 25, 2015
Bookmamas
9 Johnson Ave (Irvington) - all-ages, free, 2:00 - 4:00 PM
I actually squealed when I heard about this. Freda Love Smith has written a rock memoir, with recipes! Freda is a famed indie-rock drummer with ties to Indianapolis. Twenty-five years after she started playing in popular bands, she tells the story of her evolving career and family life through the significant role that food has played in both her rock-and-roll past and her home-life present.
Red Velvet Underground - let's take a moment to appreciate the sheer wonderfulness of the title - intersperses forty-five recipes with the story of Freda's musical past - exploring cooking, eating, music, and family, and how each one has shaped her life over the decades.
This memoir is loosely framed around the cooking lessons Freda gives her eldest son. Along the way, she recounts stories of starting her music career, forming new bands (in one of which - Antenna - she met her future husband, Jake Smith), going on the road, and pursuing work in and out of music as she raises her two sons, Jonah and Henry. I got to read a pre-release advance chapter of the book. She talks about touring with the Blake Babies, eating well while touring nationally, and included a recipe for blueberry pie. Her writing is warm and lovely, I felt like I was standing on the kitchen with her talking about music and food - two of my favorite subjects.
Freda is currently a lecturer in the School of Communication at Northwestern University. She is the co-founder of the bands the Blake Babies, Antenna, and the Mysteries of Life, writes a monthly column for Paste, and has published short stories in journals such as The North American Review, SmokeLong, Bound Off, and Riptide. In other words, she's full of awesome.
She'll be at Bookmamas bookstore, speaking about her book, in conversation-style with Dale Lawrence from The Vulgar Boatmen. The book will appeal to fans of Freda's music career, parents, and home cooks alike.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
