Buzzing Around Town - by Nora Spitznogle

Buzzing Around Town

As some of you might have noticed, there is not as much of me as there used to be. I lost weight the sensible way; exercise and eating less. All with the help of Weight Watchers and the support of some amazing women that I met on the online message board. I'm so excited - a whole group of out-of-town WW friends are coming from across the country to spend three days in our neck of the woods. I can't wait to show them the charms of Broad Ripple. Please give us a wave if you see us out and about!
Tonic Ball XIV Preview Party
Friday, October 2, 2015
Hi-Fi
The Murphy Building, 1043 Virginia Ave #4
21+, free with RSVP, doors 7 PM, show 8 PM
Tonic Ball, benefiting Second Helpings, is kicking off Tonic season with a preview night at Hi-Fi, featuring some of our city's best local talent. This year's Tonic Ball will celebrate the music of icons Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Tina Turner and Beck. This First Friday Preview Show is free with an RSVP.
Musical acts for the preview show are She Does Is Magic, Joe Welch, and The Last IV.
She Does Is Magic: Chad Serhal - Guitar/Vocals, Mark Walker - Bass/Vocals, Nathan Dynak - Drums, and Steve Marino - Guitar. I hear that Kaylie Ann Pickett will be joining them on keyboard.
I always enjoy seeing what Joe Welch does. He's the founder of the Born Again Floozies and often plays with a cast of many great musicians including Vincent Jackson, Eddie Stienmetz, and Brett Cantrell.
The Last IV: Rusty Redenbacher - vocals, Vess Ruhtenberg - guitar, David "Tufty" Clough - bass, and Devon Ashley - drums first took the stage together at last year's Tonic Ball.
Each member of the band is an icon in the Indiana music community. On top of his solo success, Redenbacher has been part of a diverse collection of acts, including the Birdmen of Alcatraz, Mudkids and Lazarus. Tufty (Toxic Reasons, Bigger Than Elvis) and Ruhtenberg (United States Three, JOT, Action Strasse) both played together in Indiana's most recognized punk group, The Zero Boys. And similarly, Ruhtenberg found himself playing alongside Ashley (Mab Lab, The Lemonheads, F.U.Z.Z, Those Young Lions) when he fronted The Pieces.
I would suggest purchasing your Tonic Ball (November 20) tickets as soon as possible - they're selling quickly and this year promises to sell out for the third year in a row. And it's all for a good cause.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
