Beat the Heat
What a treat when I opened a new sample bottle the other night. A bottle of Baron Herzog "Jeunesse". The label says the term is French for "youthful, flavorful, fun". Spot on description for the wine too. AND part of that fun, is that this juice is made from California Cabernet Sauvignon, which is not usually described with those terms. Most California Cab comes with descriptors like bold, powerful, serious. So what gives? The fermentation. The winemakers at BH cold soaked the grapes then fermented them in stainless steel. The processes together bring out the pure bright, ripe, fresh cherry aromas and flavors of the grape. It also makes the first palate impression lean to "sweet"-- not in a cloying way, but more of a perky way. You can drink this at room temp but I prefer it chilled. And it's even more enjoyable used as a base for a Sangria style sipper. Freeze some cherries, strawberries, pineapple chunks and a few slices of orange and dump the fruit and the wine in a big pitcher. Stir it up, serve it up and let the Summer Sipping Season begin! Oh, and this wine is also Kosher.
