Buzzing Around Town - by Nora Spitznogle

Buzzing Around Town

Hello lovelies! I can't believe that May is almost over and we're into the rhythm of summer. I don't want it to fly by too quickly! For me summertime is kicked off by Record Store Day in April and anchored on the other end by the Indiana State Fair. The ISF free concert series was just announced and it includes everything from the Indigo Girls to the Village People, with some Big & Rich and K.C. and the Sunshine Band sprinkled in for good measure. I'll be highlighting the shows as the State Fair gets closer (August 7 - 23, 2015).

Frank Dean & The Last Country Band and The Punkin Holler Boys
Sunday, May 17, 2015
The Jazz Kitchen
4377 N. College Ave. - 21+, 6 - 9 PM, $10
This will be a fun way to spend your Sunday night. The Jazz Kitchen is switching it up a bit and opening the stage to a fun night of bluegrass/country/honky-tonk music. The Punkin Holler Boys will open the show and have been around since 1998, and they always make me glad that I came to see them.
Singer-songwriter Frank Dean has been performing for over 40 years and you might know him from his Sindacato days or from the bands, Blue De Ville, Hillbilly Central, and American Flyers. His songs have been performed and recorded by over 60 artists. He describes himself as a "veteran of every honky tonk, dive, and skull orchard you can think of." The Last Country Band is Scott Parkhurst (guitar, harmonica, vocals), Herb Clarkson (pedal steel), LuAnn Lancton (vocals, percussion), Floyd Tucker (bass), and Steve Kennedy (drums).
And I suggest that you plan on having dinner at The Jazz Kitchen. The food is always excellent!

Otto's Funhouse Memorial Celebration
Monday, May 18, 2015
Melody Inn
3826 N Illinois St. - 21+, 7 pm doors, 8 pm show
Many of you know Otto the Comedian from his long-time comedy show and his monthly open-mic comedy night. I first met him in the 1982, as Ricky Pfeffer, a member of the Slammies, an iconic punk band. I was drawn to his energy and positivity. He taught me many things and gave me the confidence to be myself and to celebrate seemingly little things and how fun it was to be dressed for the occasion. His kindness and generosity set the bar for future relationships.
A celebration of all things Otto is planned at the Melody Inn. His songs will be covered by his friends and great musicians - including his brother "Rapper", Cara Jean Marcy, and Holly and Rick Garrett - photos and flyers will be shared and stories will be told.
Even if you didn't know Otto well, or even at all, please come and soak in all of the amazingly positive and quirky glory what was Otto. So bring a bell, bring some food, and most of all bring yourself. And for goodness sakes, in Otto's honor, be nice to each other.

Tad Robinson Day Into Night CD Release Concert
Friday, May 22, 2015
The Jazz Kitchen
5377 N College Avenue
21+, two shows: 7:30 PM, 10:00 PM, $15
Tad Robinson's latest record, Day Into Night, popped right onto the Living Blues International Radio Chart when it was released last month. And we're lucky enough that he calls Indiana home! He tours internationally and is a seven-time Blues Music Award nominee.
I'm the first to admit that blues and soul music scares me a little bit, sometimes I feel like I'm not smart enough to understand it, that somehow it's too complex. But mostly it scares me because it gets to the heart of emotions, and more than any other music for me, it quickly becomes personal. I always love hearing Tad because he does a wonderful job of stripping the songs down to their essence and letting his beautiful voice tell the story.
The Jazz Kitchen is the perfect spot to soak in Tad and his always excellent band.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
