Buzzing Around Town

Happy springtime! Even though the temperature is in the 20s as I type, I know that this can't last forever, right? My favorite marker of warmer weather and the neighborhood waking up from the winter slumber is Record Store Day on April 18 - mark your calendars! In the meantime, read on for other lovely musical events happening on our neighborhood and the city.

March Madness Music Festival
Friday, April 3 - Sunday, April 5, 2015
White River State Park
801 W Washington St. - free, all-ages, non-ticketed
Even if you don't have tickets to the big games, you can experience the excitement with this series of free shows.

Friday, April 3, 2015
Imagine Dragons, Weezer, Cold War Kids
3:00 - 10:00 PM
I've been lucky enough to see all of these bands before and I'm looking forward to seeing them again. All three are good solid rock bands. You might know Imagine Dragons from their hit a few years ago, "Radioactive." They are on tour promoting their new record. I feel like an old geezer for telling you that I saw Weezer in Philadelphia in 1994, I loved them then and I love 'em now! Cold War Kids are fun and energetic and you'll find yourself dancing along.

Saturday, April 4, 2015
Bleachers, Passion Pit, Rihanna
noon - 9:30 PM
In addition to the excellent lineup of music, they will be streaming the first of the semi-final games on the big stage screen.
Music - 2:30: Bleachers, 4:00: Passion Pit, 8:15: Rihanna
This lineup has something for everyone - a newer band getting lots of attention, a solid fan favorite, and the woman that has the most-ever YouTube video views.
Bleachers is led by Jack Antonoff, a Grammy-winning songwriter (fun, Taylor Swift), while Jack has been performing for over a decade, this band is a newer venture for him. Pop band, Passion Pit has a passionate following that not only has to do with their great songs, but leads singer's vocals and stage presences doesn't hurt also. I can't tell you anything about Rihanna that you can't find elsewhere. I know that the pop mega-star will put on an amazing show.

Sunday, April 5, 2015
Cole Swindell, Kacey Musgraves, Lady Antebellum, Zac Brown Band
2:00 - 10:00 PM
The Easter Sunday lineup is full of rock and country and country rock.
Cole Swindell spent years selling merchandise for his college buddy Luke Bryan and writing songs for other folks. He started his solo career in 2013 and has taken off. His debut record has sold over one million singles. Kacey Musgraves won the 2014 Grammy for Best Country Song and Album. Lady Antebellum has won too many Grammy's to list. I'm looking forward to seeing the Zac Brown Band. Whenever I see one of their performances on an award show I am drawn to their infectious songs and they always look like they're having a blast.
If you can't make it to the shows, ATT U-verse will be streaming it live: Uverse.com/ATTBlockParty.
Be sure that you check the NCAA March Madness Musicfest website for list of restricted items and what types of handbags that can be taken into the park.

Butler ArtsFest 2015 Outlaws & Outsiders
Thursday, April 9 - Sunday, April 19, 2015
Butler University (various venues)
all-ages, various times and ticket prices
The Butler ArtsFest is asking the question of what does it mean to be an Outsider or an Outlaw. They will help ponder that over 11 days and over 50 events. The ArtsFest has an amazing lineup of brave and bold artists that stand apart from the pack - everything from Reverend Peyton to Sleeping Beauty.
The series will bring artists from around the world with students and faculty from the Jordan College of the Arts. The programs include dance, theatre, visual arts, family programs, music, and films. I will highlight some of the programs in the next issue of the Gazette. In the meantime, visit the ArtsFest website to plan your activities.

Holy Spirit in Song
Friday, April 10, 2015
Immaculate Heart of Mary
5692 Central Avenue - all-ages, free, 7:00 PM
Immaculate Heart of Mary is hosting a coffeehouse-style evening of music in their Gathering Space. Performers include Chad Mills, Paulo Castro, Kathy Martin O'Neil, Bryan Noble, Rob De las Sales.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
