Jim is Cool Fest (With Maravich, Stealing Volume, The Cocaine Wolves, The Common)
Friday, February 20, 2015
The Melody Inn
3826 N. Illinois St - 21+, doors 9 PM, show 10:13 PM, $5.
Celebrate Jim Shaffer kicking cancer's you-know-what. Both of his bands - Maravich and The Cocaine Wolves - will be playing, along with Stealing Volume and The Common. Enjoy some excellent high-energy rock and roll and give Jim a big old hug for surviving the last year's grueling cancer treatments.
The Melody Inn show starts at 10:13, which coincidently is Jim's birthday.

Sufjan Stevens Listening Event
Thursday, March 5, 2015
Indianapolis Museum of Art Pop-Up Park
4000 Michigan Road - all-ages, 6:30 & 8:30 PM
This sounds really cool, even in my bumbling attempt to describe the event. Acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and indie-folk troubadour Sufjan Stevens is releasing his newest album in April. You have the chance to hear it first, at a listening event at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Indy CD & Vinyl will stream the album, Carrie & Lowell, for an exclusive listening party - bring your favorite headphones or borrow a pair from the IMA. You can hear the whole record before the rest of the world. There are only nine advance listening parties scheduled, and this is the only one in the United States.
The event is all-ages - beer and snacks will be available for purchase. (Alcohol for 21+ with valid ID).
A ticket to the event allows entry into the IMA Pop-Up Park for a special advance listen in a curated environment before the worldwide release. It also includes a limited edition clear vinyl copy of the album, a download code for a Sufjan Stevens song, and a gift bag from Indy CD & Vinyl.
To celebrate the release of the album, Stevens will start his North America tour in April. The headline dates includes a stop in Indianapolis at the Old National Center at The Murat. Presale tickets for the U.S. dates and further information are available at carrieandlowell.com/tour.
Early reviews are calling this Sufjan Steven's best record - and I think the opportunity to hear it is this unusual setting shouldn't be missed!
Tickets will go on sale February 20, and the listening parties will probably sell out, I suggested purchasing a ticket ahead of time. Visit Indy CD & Vinyl (806 Broad Ripple Avenue) for tickets and more details.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
