Buzzing Around Broad Ripple - by Nora Spitznogle

Buzzing Around Town

Cara Jean Marcy + Grover Parido,
Stasia Demos, Heather Styka
Saturday, December 6, 2014
Indy Hostel
4903 Winthrop Avenue
All-ages, 7:00 pm, $15 includes chili, cornbread and draught beer
Just thinking about this event is warming my heart! The evening promises to be full of beautiful music, kooky stories, and friendship making. Cara Jean Marcy's haunting lyrics and songbird voice paired with Grover Parido's gorgeous cello playing always make me happy. Stasia Demos has written some of the most quirky and perceptive songs that I've heard. If you're lucky she'll bring her accordion. Heather Styka music has a vintage feel with poetic lyrics.
The evening will be in the spirit of a house concert. Everyone will be there to listen and song swapping and storytelling will abound. The price of admission covers chili, cornbread and beer from Outliers Brewing Company. Feel free to bring a side dish to share. If you haven't been to the hostel it is the perfect time I get a tour of the great facility.

A Christmas Carol (with a glimpse of Nora on Dec. 7, 2:00 pm)
Show runs now - December 26, 2014
Indiana Repertory Theatre
140 W. Washington Street
All-ages, times and ticket prices vary
I will be in the Sunday, December 7, 2:00 pm performance of A Christmas Carol. Okay, it is a teeny-tiny part and I bought my way onstage in the silent auction fundraiser for IRT last year, but I have a part! The best news for all of you is that I'll be surrounded by the wildly talented Chuck Goad, Emily Ristine, Ryan Artzberger and other professional actors.
I would love it if you would support the Indiana Repertory Theatre by seeing this excellent holiday performance (my part notwithstanding) and enjoy our beautiful downtown.
I'll be the one with shaky knees!

Keystone-Monon Neighborhood Partnership Pop Up Shop
Tuesday, December 9, 2014
The Tradesman Guild
1140 East 46th Street
Free, all-ages, 6:00pm - 9:00pm
The Keystone-Monon Neighborhood Partnership is hosting a one-night only holiday shop at The Tradesman Guild. Help KMNP revitalize this forgotten corner of our neighborhood while completing (or in my case, starting) your holiday shopping. More than 30 vendors will be represented. I can't wait!

I Am Broad Ripple Toy Drive
Wednesday, December 17 , 2014
Sabbatical
921 Broad Ripple Avenue
21+. $10 or new toy of equivalent value
Doors open at 7:00 pm, bands start at 9:00 pm
The "I Am Broad Ripple" movement started this summer after the highly-publicized violence in the Village. The effort was born from with the idea that the Broad Ripple community is much more than what you see on the news. The idea is to reconnect with the creativity and spirit of community of the Village. That all are welcome in Broad Ripple - outsiders are merely those who don't know that they have already been accepted.
They are hosting a toy drive and in the spirit of the group, will have fun doing it. Bring a toy (or two or six) and enjoy live music - Sphie, Chemical Envy, and the Breakdown Kings. Grab a chance to win a door prize and get your photo taken with Santa Corey Ewing.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
