Sometimes poets are everywhere. So it was when Bill Emmert and I visited Iowa City in the summer of 2000.

the poets of iowa city

everywhere we turned
was a poet
ready to recite
their own verse
from their memory
or from a small book
in her purse

when moving
the magic
is manifest
and doesn't need
prompting or prodding
the flow is built in
to the process
to the process
i must thank
for meeting in motion
