This sudden blast of Fall-like weather has caused a slight change in sipping habits. Bigger, bolder wines have found their way into my glass and those of others for whom I have been doing some wine tasting events. Here are the winners. Widely available and delightful no matter what kind of weather Mother Nature gives us the rest of the month.
2010 Nightfall Cabernet Sauvignon-rich, dry, smooth red from Lodi region of California. Aromas and flavors of black cherry and current. Great value.
2012 Colby Red-Easy drinking red blend that also gives money to local heart research. Expressive aromas and flavors of black cherry, mocha, plum, anise. Dry, mouth filling fun.
Avive Sparkling Peach, France-Oo la la! Sparkling wine infused with real white peach juice. Summer time in a glass. Not too sweet, not too dry, just perfectly peachy.
2013 MacMurray Estate Vineyards Russian River Valley Sonoma County Pinot Gris-Terrific food wine year round and one to keep in mind for Thanksgiving. Silky smooth mouth feel. Tempting aromas of almonds and golden delicious apple give way to juicy satisfying flavors of pear, white peach and cherimoya.
2008 Harmonique Chardonnay "un-Oaked" Anderson Valley, Mendocino County, California-small producer of extraordinary Pinot Noir and they also do the other Burgundian babe-Chardonnay. Last time I served this bottle was at a tasting for the Perk Up Cafe/Brot Garten Valentine Dinner. Remember that review? The few people who attended RAVED and wanted MORE of the Harmonique wines I brought to that event. Remember what the weather was like on Valentines Day this year? SNOW - FEET of it! It was an extraordinary weather and wine night. I opened a bottle this week and its still offering smooth, silky, rich, layered aromas and flavors of fig, white raisin, ripe and juicy d'anjou pear. Full bodied and bold enough to stand up to even some red meat dishes like beef wellington or lamb with green curry. Try it with thick cut tuna or salmon steaks.
