Indy Hostel Folk Fest
Saturday, August 9, 2014
Indy Hostel
4903 Winthrop Ave, all-ages, $10, 1 PM - 11:30 PM
I can't believe that this is the fifth year for Indy Hostel Folk Fest - or that Indy Hostel is in their eleventh year of business. Before the hostel opened I had hundreds of out-of-town musicians sleep on my sofa. The majority of them had played at CATH coffeehouse and then word spread and I was a stop on the Underground Railroad of Touring Musicians. As much as I loved having them at my house, I was so excited for the hostel to open that I was painting walls and cleaning bathrooms to help get the place ready.
Upland Brewing will bring the beer truck and food trucks will be on-site. Freewheelin' Community Bikes will be on-site to valet your bicycle. Feel free to bring a chair or blanket with you.
Music Lineup: 12:30 - Dave Carter
1:10 - Cyrus Youngman
2:00 - Michael Kelsey
3:00 - The Dapper
4:00 - Sindacato
5:00 - Knollwood Boys
6:00 - Lisa Walks
7:00 - Joshua Powell
8:00 - Willoughby Sprig
9:00 - Sweet Poison Victim
11:00- INDYPROV

WNAP Raft Race 40th Reunion and WARMup to WARMfest
Sunday, August 10, 2014
White River Yacht Club (1400 E 74th St)
Broad Ripple Park (1550 Broad Ripple Ave)
all-ages, free, Noon - 6:00 PM
Does anyone remember the WNAP raft races? I still can't believe that anyone let all of us slightly tipsy youngsters float down the White River in homemade "rafts." The first raft race was held in 1974 and the last in 1983. Creativity was the key in designing your raft, with water-worthiness and the quality of beer that you could carry factoring into your design. The raft races would end with a worthy of the times big-hair rock concert.
There is no race this year, but you can re-live the glory days or hear first-hand about the crazy times. Starting at noon at the White River Yacht Club there will be music from Dr. Spin - The World's Only All Vinyl D.J., vintage Raft Race video footage and a meet-and-greet with your favorite WNAP jockeys. Dig out those old photo albums because there will also be a photo contest for "Coolest Raft Race Photo Ever" and practice your stories for the "Best Raft Race Story Ever Told" open mic competiton.*
Though the Raft Race Reunion isn't actually a race, people are encouraged to bring your sea worthy watercraft and join the fleet. Motorized watercrafts will need to launch from the public boat ramp at Broad Ripple Park, just inside the main entrance to the left. If you have a hand carry boat (canoe, kayak, etc.), you may use the boat ramp at the White River Yacht Club or the one at Broad Ripple Park. Or, you can turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream from a boat landing somewhere to the north. Join the flotilla and brave the mighty White River once again.
The party continues until 6:00 PM at Broad Ripple Park where Warm up to Warm Fest will have live music, yoga and tai chi programs, arts & crafts booths, drinks, food trucks, and a paddlewheel boat. Broad Ripple Park schedule: Noon - Yoga, Fitness Run, Well-Being Fair, 1:00 - Crossfit, Indy City Futbol All-Star Game, 2:00 - Ruditoonz (Rock and Roll for kids), paddleboard, 2:30 - Zumba, 3:00 - Chad Mills, 4:00 - Hyryder (Indy's Grateful Dead Tribute Band).
* How to enter the "Best Raft Race Story Ever Told" Contest - Is there an absolutely true raft race story that's been rattling around in your head for the past 40 years or so? It's the kind of thing you pull out at parties, people gather around and hang on your every word. Maybe it's how you met your (first) wife/husband. Launching your raft. Meeting the mayor. Streaking the concert. Do you have a burning desire to stand at an open mic, tell it to the world and maybe win some cool prizes?
1. The story has to be absolutely true.
2. You must be able to tell the story in two minutes or less.
3. They are limiting the number of storytellers to the first 15 people to sign up.
4. Sign up will be a clipboard at the Irvington Vinyl / T-Shirt Distribution table.
5. Storytelling starts promptly at 2:15pm, and storytellers will present in the order they signed up.
6. WNAP jocks will narrow the field from fifteen to three finalists using whatever criteria they want. Their decisions are final.
7. Audience cheers will determine the order of the top three. 8. You agree to have your story video recorded, and possibly become immortalized in a TV show we may or may not ever put together.
How to enter the Coolest Raft Race Photo Ever Contest - Looking through your photo album, do you think you have the coolest photo ever taken at a raft race? It could be of you, your raft, a band, the raft race queen, crowds, traffic, disc jockeys, or other raft race craziness?
1. Make a copy of your original photo. It's easy - you should be able to do it at CVS, Walgreens, WalMart, Target, etc. Make a copy about 5x7 or 8x10. You'll be leaving it at the yacht club.
2. Write your name and phone number on the back.
3. Bring the photo(s) to the White River Yacht Club on August 10 from Noon to 2:00 PM.
4. You can bring as many entries as you want.
5. When you get to the club, look for one of the little boxes with push pins on the window sill of the deck. Go ahead and take one push pin for each photo you brought.
6. Pin the photo onto any of the posts out on the deck area.
7. It (they) must be entered between Noon and 2:00 PM.
8. Right after 2pm, the WNAP jocks will make the rounds and pick the top three coolest raft race photos ever, with third, second and first place winners.
9. The WNAP jocks will judge the winner using whatever criteria they want. The decision of the judges will be final.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
