DPW presents Cornell plan
posted: Jun. 21, 2013
Jason Cook, an engineer with the Department of Public Works, hosted a public meeting at Broad Ripple Park on June 5. The plans for Cornell include fixing the drainage problems, widening and striping the street, rebuilding the existing sidewalks and driveway curb cuts, adding new sidewalks, and changing the parking configurations. It had been previously rumored that Cornell would become one-way. This is not scheduled to occur. Instead, the street will be widened allowing the on-street parking to move closer to the Monon Trail. Two lanes will then be striped. The widths of the lanes will be narrow, about the width of Meridian lanes in the 56th Street area. Some of the parking will be reverse angle parking. This means a car will drive past the spot and back into it on the diagonal. This puts the trunk on the Monon side for safer unloading of bikes.
The project is expected to begin in late July and finish in November, 2013. It will be performed in stages, so as not to block all of the businesses along Cornell at the same time. For more information: www.indy.gov/rebuildindy
