Buzzing Around Town

Musical Family Tree Listen Local Series
Broad Ripple Park
Starts Friday, May 24, 2013
all-ages, pay what you want, 7:00 PM
This series is just another reason that I love our community so much. Broad Ripple based, Musical Family Tree is hosting a series of Listen Local concerts. MFT is an online archive of Indiana music from the punk era to now. Have you always wondered what happened to your favorite band from Muncie when you were in college? A great place to start your research is musicalfamilytree.com and all of the music is available for free download.
The awesomeness starts Friday, May 24; the food trucks and beer will be available starting at 6:00 and the music starts at 7:00. The first concert features Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, Gentleman Caller, and Everything, Now!. If you've heard any of these bands you know how fabulous this lineup is. If you haven't, trust me - go and be prepared to fall in love with all three bands. All three groups (and Margot keyboardist Cameron McGill) are busy preparing to release new albums this year.
Margot and the Nuclear So and So's have a huge national fan base and are often on tour. They are close to releasing their fifth studio record. Bloomington-based Gentleman Caller is led by Kenny Childers, unarguably one of the most vibrant contributors to Indiana's music scene in the last 20 years. Everything, Now! promises a one-time-only enactment of its debut LP, "Sunshine of Doom" to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the record's release.
All three bands feature original music, great musicians, and buckets fun. Everyone from your kiddos to your grandparents will appreciate the music.
Mark your calendars for the rest of the series:
Friday, June 14, 2013 - Art Adams, Apache Dropout, Thee Tsunamis
Friday, June 28, 2013 - We Are Hex, Burnt Ones, 2150's
Friday, July 19, 2013 - TBA
Friday, August 9, 2013 - TBA
Friday, August 23, 2013 - TBA
All of the shows are family-friendly and pay-what-you-want. All of the proceeds benefit Indianapolis Parks Foundation. I'll keep you posted on the lineups for the July and August shows when they are announced.
Visit the Musical Family Tree website to hear music from all of the bands.

Girl Power Night!
Saturday, May 25, 2013
Melody Inn
3826 Illinois Street
21+, doors 9:00, music 10:00, $6.
Girl Power is taking over Punk Rock Night at the Melody Inn, proving once again that women can rock just as hard as men. I'm not sure why there was even any question in the first place. The lineup is outstanding: The Lickers, Kaleidostars, Misunderstood, & Electric Dirt. The Lickers are donating part of their merchandise sales to the wonderful Girls Rock! Indianapolis camp.

Japandroids with A Place to Bury Strangers
Tuesday, May 28, 2013
The Vogue
6259 N. College Ave
21+, doors 7:00, show 8:00, $15 advance/$17 day of show
Japandroids is a two piece band from Vancouver, BC and have been playing since 2006. They originally intended to be a trio but Brian King and David Prowse decided to forgo the lead singer and share the duties. They keep it simple with one guitar, a set of drums, and two voices. With minimal gear they sound like a larger band, running the gamut of rock and roll music.
A Place to Bury Strangers is a New York-based noise rock (liberal use of dissonance and feedback) band. The three-piece band plays a heavy, atmospheric influenced blend of psychedelic rock, shoegaze and space rock.
Tickets are $15 in advance and are available at The Vogue box office or at Indy CD & Vinyl.

Mos Def, with Kool's Bazaar, and The Proforms
Friday May 31, 2013
The Vogue
6259 N. College Ave
21+, doors 8:00, show 9:00, $26 advance/$28 day of show
Mos Def (Dante Terrell Smith) has been a major force in the hip hop world since the 1990s and he's still going strong. He's on the top of the list of Top MCs and Top Lyricists and his talents also include acting (Brother Sam in the Dexter series). This is your chance to see a legend in action.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
