The Wine Scene - by Jill A. Ditmire

True Wine
Martin Schliessmann is making a movie about Indiana wine. Not just about the current day production but the history of the industry and the man who got the grapes growing and going in 18th century Indiana, John James Dufour.
But, why?
Well that question seems to be the driving force behind his penchant to produce documentary films. His previous "Why Sturgis?" focuses on the history of Sturgis, South Dakota which hosts the world's longest and largest motorcycle rally annually. It took two years to produce and was released theatrically in 2007.
This time around the movie is not called "Why Indiana" or even "Du Who?" It's called "In(diana) Vino Veritas" which the In Vino Veritas part means translates to "in wine, truth".
Since he is self-funded and has a full time job, the project is anything but a hobby but also not on a major sponsored deadline for release. Martin and his videographer have been traveling the state shooting interviews with almost all of the now 70 Indiana wineries, plus others who have contributed to the making of wine in Hoosier land and that list of interviews alone is enough to make one want to see the film. He plans to have it ready to release by end of the year. Shooting the Dufour scenes will be key and Martin is still casting, so if you are interested in being part of what will be a legendary documentary on Indiana wine and its founding father, check out his website www.indianavinoveritas.com

True Brew
Speaking of documentaries, Rita Kohn has produced a few that air on PBS stations across the US. She is also a well respected playwright and author of numerous books, plus the art/music reviewer for NUVO. AND a guru in the world of micro brew beer.
Her book "TRUE BREW" is a fascinating compilation of the history and taste of Indiana micro breweries with true user-friendly guides, tasting notes, stories, adventures. It is a must-read for anyone who calls them self a "foodie", as beer and food are as much as a pair as wine and food. Rita will be my guest on Wednesday March 20th on 90.1 WFYI radio at 5:44pm during my weekly Wednesday LIVE chat with local food, wine, arts, culture, people. You can buy one of her books on Amazon.com or local wine shoppes and book sellers.

True Blue 2
On Wednesday March 27th, 2013, I will be interviewing Blue 2, the recently retired "America's Dog" mascot of Butler University. He turned over the work to Blue 3, or "Trip", during the half time of the Butler/Xavier game on March 9th. It was Senior Night and the seniors and the rest of the squad stepped up to WIN the game. Blue 2 and his handler, Michael Kaltenmark will be on 90.1 WFYI at 5:44pm to talk with me about Blue 2's career and his retirement. Of course don't forget that City Dogs Grocery and BRG columnist Susan Smith are the official food providers for Blue 2 and Trip. CHEERS to Blue 2 and his 9th "boofday" also on March 27th.
