Victory of Da Feet!
Anne Mahlum would head out on her daily run in Philadelphia and routinely pass a homeless shelter. What began as occasional waves and hellos, soon increased to friendly conversation. One day in 2007, an idea suddenly hit Anne. What is stopping them from running as well? Anne already was well aware with not only the fitness benefits but the vast mental attributes that regular exercise provides: increased confidence and self esteem, sense of accomplishment, elevated mood, and stress relief just to name a few..... And when done in a group setting, it also provides a social aspect and sense of community and belonging. Of course, the shelter gives the residents a roof over their heads and food, but adding a physical component to their lives could be exactly what they need for their bodies and may also give them life tools so they can get "back on their feet".
Anne called the shelter and with an abundance of support from the community and the media, Philadelphia's first Homeless Running Program was created. The first run took place on Tuesday, July 3rd at 6 a.m.,and now the organization continues to grow and support its members and communities of each city in the program. Back on My Feet, now also has chapters in Boston, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, New York....and Indianapolis (yay!).
Their website has a great explanation of the program's objectives: "The organization does not provide food nor shelter, but instead provides a community that embraces equality, respect, discipline, teamwork and leadership. Back on My Feet's approach focuses on the very profound and innate desire for all of us - regardless of age, race, socio-economic status - to feel recognized, appreciated, valued and important. Through dedication and hard work, Members earn the opportunity to create a new road for themselves by advancing to the "Next Steps" phase of the program where they gain access to educational, job training and employment opportunities, as well as financial aid. In short, BoMF focuses on changing the direction of people's lives by changing the way they see themselves."
The BoMF program is much more than running as well. Each regular participant has access to the BoMF Next Steps program staff to develop a road map for developing an independent lifestyle. As the website explains "Members have access to educational and job training opportunities, and through dedication to the program, earn financial aid to help them move toward employment and permanent housing. Members can use financial aid to address barriers to self-sufficiency including outstanding fines, tools for a job, transportation, education, certifications and security deposits. On average, 75 percent of Members are in the Next Steps phase of the program - a true testament to the efficacy and sustainability of the program." Since the program was founded over 50% of participants go on to lead an independent lifestyle. Amazing!
BoMF is always looking for volunteers and/or donations. Go to www.backonmyfeet.com for more information about this amazing program that not only changes the lives of the residents and volunteers, but also changes the community! Just another way that fitness and physical activity SAVES lives :)
