Career Corner - by Mario Morone

Vern Ludden is chairperson of Indiana Wesleyan's doctoral program in Organizational Management. The fifth edition of his book, "Job Savvy" was recently released where he shared some thoughts on technology and employee workplace behavior.
"A lot more employers are placing emphasis on the appropriate and inappropriate use of technology in the workplace. Be more cautious about posting information on the web that might be construed about your employer and the monitoring of this information at work. Being aware of these same things applies when you're using something like Twitter as those comments are being seen by people and your employer," he advised.
"We keep tweaking things in the book. The primary thing is how technology changes and impacts employees in the workplace and in stressing appearance. One thing we tried to emphasize the most is that informality doesn't give you free reign. You need to check with your supervisor and co-workers in the workplace," Ludden noted.
"Many employer expectations haven't changed since I followed this over the years. Since 1971, the studies of employers and what they want have remained pretty much the same: having basic responsible skills, the reliability of what you're going to do when you say you're going to do it, being at work on time and meeting expectations. Knowing how to get along with people, respecting your supervisor and following instructions are key. When I wrote "Job Savvy", I wrote it with first-time workers in mind, like high school students and college students," Ludden explained. One-third of its sales have been to general organizations and private individuals.
Professor Ludden has worked at Indiana Wesleyan since June of 2002. He formerly operated a Workforce Development office in the Allen County cities of Bluffton, Huntington, Portland and Winchester. His career in adult education has assisted countless people in developing and improving their skills and knowledge. His thoughtful advice in "Job Savvy" can benefit employees and job seekers of all ages.
