On my recent Alaska trip I stayed in Anchor Point. Captain Cook lost a large anchor there in 1778 while navigating the (now) Cook Inlet.

Homer sits 14 miles from Anchor Point. I had dreamed of visiting Homer since my first Alaskan foray five years ago. Homer did not disappoint me.

The Homer spit is a narrow strip of land jutting 4.5 miles into the Cook Inlet which opens into the Pacific Ocean. The view of and from the spit is spellbinding. The water is gorgeous and changes colors based on the angle of the sun. The volcanoes in the background accentuate the splendor.

At the end of the spit sits 'The Salty Dawg Saloon.' The Salty Dawg is a legendary bar, once a lighthouse. The inside is equally unique with its woodwork and signed dollar bills stuck throughout the establishment by patrons over the years.

Homer is considered an artist community. I visited the local art co-op and was impressed by the breadth and polish of the work displayed by 45 artists.

Homer, Alaska is the halibut fishing capital of the world. Some fish for the food, others for the halibut. (Sorry for the pun.) I consider halibut to be a big ugly fish which tasted bad. (I will not be mailing this article to Alaska.)

I would, however, like to include a photo of a moose I snapped while feeding in downtown Homer.
