Career Corner - by Mario Morone

Earle Hart, founder of Passport to Employment, provided some unique and successful effective job search techniques anyone can use.
"Business cards are a valuable tool to exchange with individuals: not only at networking events, but also anywhere you might meet people. A man seeking a financial services job wore a business card as a badge listing his skills and what type of job he was seeking. A grocery store cashier noticed his badge in the checkout lane and told him about a bank looking for an assistant branch manger. He applied for the job and was hired," Hart explained.
Many office supply stores can print business cards at competitive prices. It's easier to exchange a business card with somebody than just asking for one. That new contact can lead to many more.
"A man was told to give his wife and daughter some of his business cards to pass out to their friends. Initially skeptical of the idea, he did so and eventually found a job through one of his friends. Everybody has a different network of people they know. This man located a new job through one of his daughter's friends. Another individual placed his qualifications on a yard sign in front of his house. A neighbor who was unaware he was job hunting, mentioned a company who eventually interviewed him which led to a new career," Hart added.
"Writing a simple letter to friends telling them that you're seeking a new career and listing your skills can bring positive results and job leads," he advised.
Changing your telephone answering machine or cell phone message to, "Thanks for calling. I'm out seeking a new career, but please leave your name and number and I'll get back with you," lets callers know you're looking for work.
Earle Hart provides additional job-hunting insights Monday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Church at the Crossing, located at 9100 Haverstick Road. Their website www.golove.org, includes a list of local jobs in and around the central Indiana area.
