What do Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Jay, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, John Hammond, and Dr. John all have in common? Duke Robillard.
Guitarist. Bandleader. Songwriter. Singer. Producer. Session musician. And a one-man cheering section for the blues, in all its forms and permutations. And every one of those names has shared recording studio space or stage time with a man who is a legend in the blues community.
The Blues Music Awards have named Duke Robillard the "Best Blues Guitarist" four years out of five.
Not that it goes to Robillard's head. He's still on the road, still playing as many as 250 dates a year. And still proving, night after night, that his true talent is bringing people out to hear the music, appreciate the show, and dance to the blues.
Duke Robillard is a man in command of a full range of creative talents - unique in the blues, and rare in the music industry as a whole. He is, in fact, a complete artist at the height of his power, and we're lucky to have him playing in our neck of the woods.

Locals Only always has lovely art hanging on their walls, but in this case the art goes hand-in-hand with the music. Wayne "Barfly" Bertsch has been drawing the Barfly comic strip featured in NUVO for the last nine years.
You can see (and purchase) hundreds of original Barfly strips at Locals Only during the month of March.
Wayne's comics highlight a local band, music venue, or musical event. Having your likeness drawn by him is always an honor. The Queen Bee character has made some guest appearances in various strips over the years - I love how Wayne manages to make a cartoon bee look curvy and cute. In December, Wayne had a full-length cartoon featured in NUVO. One of the panels pictured me chatting with Jesus on Christmas Eve, while he and Wayne bar hopped. Actually, Wayne tells the story through pen and ink much better than I can explain it. Go see for yourself!
Opening night for the art show will feature a lineup of some of Wayne's favorite bands.
Jenn Cristy will kick off the evening with a special solo show - you won't want to miss this. Jenn has a soulful voice and charismatic stage presence. Hearing her play a rare solo show will be a fun treat.
Mojo Gumbo plays a raucous, jumping brand of zydeco that's spiced up with just a touch of Chicago blues.
The Innocent Boys have gained a reputation as a go-to band for just about any tribute show. No matter what the theme, they'll have you dancing in the aisles.
Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
