Broad Ripple slated for Destination Indiana
posted: Jan. 06, 2012
Thanks to the generosity of Village supporters, Broad Ripple Village will be the subject of a Destination Indiana exhibit at the Indiana Historical Society (IHS).
"It is now official," wrote Frank Eagan, director of corporate relations for the IHS, in a congratulatory email. "Broad Ripple is the first historic neighborhood to sign up for the Destination Indiana journey and we are delighted."
Destination Indiana uses innovative technology, touch screens and immersive displays of images from the Society's vast archive of historic materials to tell stories about various aspects of Indiana history.
The Destination Indiana exhibit, inside the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio Street, on the Canal in downtown Indianapolis, features eight time-travel stations that each comfortably seats six. Stories from all 92 Indiana counties are included; guests use a touch screen to select from a menu of choices and navigate slide shows. Current journeys include stories about transportation, agriculture, the Civil War, ethnic groups, social justice and reform movements.
As part of the agreement, IHS staff will meet with members of the Committee for Historic Broad Ripple in February to begin the process of crafting the Village's story. The journey will debut in August, during Broad Ripple's 175th Anniversary.
"Broad Ripple Village is honored by this opportunity to recognize our neighborhood's historic significance," said Tom Healy, president of the Broad Ripple Alliance for Progress, the Broad Ripple Village Association's 501(c)(3) fund-raising arm. "The community is grateful to Bruce and Julie Buchanan and Richard Vonnegut for their generosity in making this project possible," he added.
Established in 1830, the Indiana Historical Society is the oldest state historical society west of the Allegheny Mountains. Details at indianahistory.org
