Annual BRVA elections held at quarterly mtg
by Alan Hague
posted: Oct. 28, 2011

The last quarterly public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) was held on October 18, 2011, at the Indianapolis Art Center. The last meeting of the year is also the annual election of the BRVA board candidates. About 80 residents were at the meeting that was called to order at 7pm.
First on the agenda was the North District update from Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). Sergeant Oatts reported that almost all crime statistics are down. As compared to the year-to-date from 2011 to 2010 robberies were down 45%, aggravated assaults down 66%, residential burglaries down 29%. Total crime in the Broad Ripple area is down 6%.
Next, each of the nine candidates running for a position on the BRVA board introduced themselves and told why they are running. The nine candidates were Rich Bees, Chris Carlson, Peter Dean, Tom Healy, Brenda Rising-Moore, Rob Sabatini, Jay Wetzel, Mark Wolf, and Sue Zilisch. After the candidates spoke, the ballots were collected for counting. (results in News & Views on page 28)
While the ballots were being counted Casey Springer and Jeff Robinson of the Super Bowl Host Committee gave an update on activities in Indy during early February. The committee expects about 150,000 visitors to Indianapolis for the game. Jeff said, "I was downtown during the Final Four, and we had 80,000 people in for the Final Four. There were lines around the block to get into restaurants. You think about doubling that, you can see where it presents some problems, but also some opportunities for our outlying areas to participate."
Plans are to connect Broad Ripple with downtown through volunteers, helping visitors move between the two areas for shopping and dining. The committee wants visitors to feel like they are "at the Super Bowl" regardless of where they are in Indy. Kits of NFL gear to decorate stores and restaurants will be available for purchase. Business owners should plan for the events by making sure they have enough inventory and employees during that time. Also, since the game is in February, making sure that parking lots and sidewalks are cleared of snow and ice.
BRVA president Mark Wolf outlined the year in review. He listed all of the projects that the BRVA worked on in the past year, as well as all of the events that took place. He then listed the upcoming events which included: the Holiday Preview Party on November 11, the last 2011 Farmers Market on November 19, Broad Ripple Lights Up! parade and tree lighting on December 10, and the 175th anniversary of Broad Ripple on the weekend of April 21, 2011.
The next quarterly BRVA public meeting will be Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at 7pm at the Indianapolis Art Center located at 8220 E. 67th Street [A4 on map].
