APP-etize Your Health!

I recently had a life changing experience. . . .I bought an iPhone. Now hold on! Before you roll your eyes and close this paper, hear me out. Yes, I easily do e-mails, text messages, update my Facebook, check the daily weather and take pictures at will, and have rather enjoyed the freedom away from my home computer that often decides to crash randomly (this is especially frustrating when I am on the last sentence of my Gazette article!). All of you who have an iPhone can probably relate to that. In fact, when I don't have it with me I seem to be without a limb; yes I am a junkie! However, what I probably like the most about this fantastic gadget are the vast numbers of APPlications that can aid me, my clients, and you to improved health and fitness; many of which are free. . . .which is always a good thing!
Here are my personal favorites:
Fooducate → This app was created by dietitians and allows you to scan a product barcode, search for products or browse by categories. It will give the item a "grade", display the pros and cons of the product and provide healthier alternatives. It truly feels like having a dietitian right there with you! Be careful though. . . it can be addicting, I was clicking away in my refrigerator for quite some time. . . and to my surprise a few of the items I was convinced were healthy were deceivingly not.
Map My Run → Want to track your pace, distance, and calories burned on your walk/run while listening to your music? Then this app is for you! You can also choose to have voice prompts that update your progress enroute. If you are out of town, no problem, this app can show you where to go, as it has 26 million routes all over the world.
Lose It! → This app is a basic calorie counter, fitness tracker, and food diary with few bells and whistles. While it contains a wide array of commonly consumed foods, those who use their own recipes or buy new items at the store will want to add those into their favorites list for easy future reference. Daily exercises include common tasks like yard work, yoga, and walking, and the app gives you the ability to adjust your intensity level to more accurately reflect how many calories you actually burned.
Pandora → I love this app as I use it for personal use and at my studio! The Pandora app provides you with a type of custom jukebox in that you select the genre/artist that strikes your mood. No monotonous playlists and it is free! I love to put on an artist that I listened to in high school while on a run. . . brings back great music and memories.
Eat This Not That → This app, which is based on the best-selling book by the same name, gives you the ugly truth about the foods you encounter every day--and offer you a guilt-free alternative to help you feel full (not deprived.). In addition to giving a grade for almost every product available at your grocery store, it also grades 13,000 popular items at chains such as Chili's, Wendy's, Panera and more!
Coach Hacker Traveler Workout → Business travelers are notorious for skipping workouts when on the road, but it doesn't have to be that way! The Traveler Workout app from the Coach is an affordable series of workout videos that downloads to your phone. Using just the furniture and tools available in a typical hotel room the 6 exercises are a great alternative to skipping the crowded hotel gym.
Gym Buddy → This workout log gets very detailed, offering countdown timers to monitor rest periods, customization of plans, and the ability to email your history to your home or work. In addition to the workout log, this app provides performance graphs and a workout calendar to help you do better as time goes on. No excuses!
These are just several of HUNDREDS of apps, but hopefully this gives you an idea of everything out there that you can put into your health toolbox! Add some to your APPliance.
