Firehouse celebration set for October 8
posted: Sept. 30, 2011
The Broad Ripple Village Association's (BRVA) Committee for Historic Broad Ripple has nominated the Broad Ripple firehouse (station #32) to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1922, the firehouse has been a focal point of the Village ever since.
On Saturday, October 8, 2011, from 1 to 4 pm there will be a celebration at the 6330 N. Guilford Avenue station.
Some of the history of civic assembly and public safety on the firehouse site, which has been a public gathering place and civic venue since 1851: Union Church & cemetery, built 1851; original town hall built there before Wellington merged with Broad Ripple in 1884; housed polling place, jail and base of operations for Broad Ripple's volunteer fire department; the station was alleged to have had horse-drawn fire apparatus; later, the fire wagon was hand-pulled and had a hand pump). Station 32 is the oldest operating fire station in Indianapolis.
Announcement of the original dedication ceremony for the station from the 1922 Broad Ripple Booster.
