Red Key Tavern 60th Anniversary Celebration
Saturday, April 2, 2011
5170 N. College Ave - 11:00 a.m. - 'til last call, 21 +
If those walls could talk. . . .some of us might be in a little trouble, but I imagine there are some great stories to be told. The Red Key Tavern will celebrate 60 years in the neighborhood on April 2. The anniversary is bittersweet; it will be the first without the dear Russel Settle, who died just a year ago, on April 5.
I am lucky enough to work at the Red Key most Saturday nights. Bartender Robin Hudson and I always have fun. We laugh (usually at me), we cry (okay, usually just me) and enjoy all of the wonderful customers that walk through the door.
Swing on in Saturday to look at photographs, tell stories and congratulate Russ's family on a job well done. Just don't move the tables or put your feet on the chairs. I'm a stickler for the rules too - just delivered in a gentler fashion.
And while you're there, pop your head in to LUNA music and wish them a happy fifth anniversary of landing on the corner of 52nd and College Avenue.

Ben Carroll
Saturday, April 2, 2011
Indy Hostel - 4903 Winthrop Ave - 317-727-1696
8:00 p.m., all-ages, non-smoking, $10
I am fascinated with second-generation musicians. I've been following Teddy Thompson, Justin Townes Earle, Lilly Hiatt, Ben Taylor and Jen Chapin (see April 14 preview below for more on Jen) for a bit. I imagine it's hard to follow your parent's careers without a ton of comparisons. And I know that try as I might when interviewing these folks not to mention their parents, it's almost impossible. I almost blurted out to Justin Earle once that I'd like to be his next step-mom.
Ben Carroll, son of Starland Vocal Band members ("Afternoon Delight") is holding his own in the music world. His soulful, powerful voice has been compared to a cross between Stevie Wonder and James Taylor. He's a chart-topping songwriter and guitar player.
Shows at Indy Hostel are set in the house concert style. Everyone has a seat in the intimate (but not too-crowded) room and the crowd is there to listen. No bar chatter or clanging bottles to distract from the concert. The hostel is a red four-square house at the north-east corner of 49th Street and Winthrop Avenue. There is plenty of parking just east the hostel off of 49th Street. This promises to be a lovely show.

Amy Speace with Thomm Jutz - CD Release Show
Wednesday, April 6, 2011
Big Hat Books - 6510 Cornell Ave
7:30 p.m. $15, all-ages, non-smoking
Pardon me if I sound a little gushy, but I'm so excited that I can barely stand it! Amy Speace is making a detour from her concert schedule to play a special show at Big Hat Books, in celebration of her brand-new album, Land Like a Bird.
I've mentioned to Liz Houghton Barden over the years that I would love to host a house concert-style show in Big Hat Books beautiful upper room, but only if Amy Speace was available. The stars have aligned. Amy had a last minute spot in her schedule and Liz said yes.
Amy Speace has come a long way from playing at CATH coffeehouse to opening for July Collins. I was smitten with Amy's music from the first time I heard her play on her first-ever tour. Amy caught the ear of Judy Collins, who signed her to Wildflower Records. It's almost like Judy and I have something in common - Judy offered Amy a recording contract and world tour and I offered her my sofa and the Monon Trail.
Land Like a Bird, is Amy's first record since moving from NYC to a cozy house in Nashville, TN is getting rave reviews, The Classic Rock Examiner writes "Amy Speace sounds uncannily like a 21st Century Joan Baez, her timbred voice full of genuine emotions. . . the record soars with salient vocals and poetic lyrics."
Amy is touring with guitar player extraordinaire, Thomm Jutz. Thomm most recently toured with Nanci Griffith and is the guitar player of choice for gobs of East Nashville musicians, including our own Otis Gibbs.
Reservations are suggested (queenbeenora@gmail.com), but not necessary.

Mike Watt + The Missingmen
Wednesday, April 13, 2011
LUNA music - 5202 N. College Avenue
5:00 p.m., free, all-ages, non-smoking
Radio Radio - 1119 Prospect Street
9:00 p.m., $10 advance/$12 door, 21+, non-smoking
LUNA music is hosting an in-store performance of the legendary Mike Watt of Minutemen, fIREHOSE and The Stooges and a host of other ground-breaking musical groups and collaborations. Mike is known as the seminal post-punk bass player and received a lifetime achievement award from Bass Player Magazine in 2008.
In-store performances are a great way to catch a peek of the band and purchase a CD and get it signed all during daylight hours. Mike is has been a DIY musicians before anyone even thought of turning Do It Yourself into an industry.
Mike and the band will play plugged in set at Radio Radio later that evening. This show is not to be missed by all of us post-punk still young-at-heart fans.

Jen Chapin with Tonos Triad
Thursday, April 14, 2011
Irving Theater - 5505 E. Washington Street
8:00 p.m., $8 advance/$12 door, non-smoking
Jen Chapin is a commanding performer, wowing audiences wherever she plays, be it on Late Nite with Conan O'Brien, sharing a stage with Bruce Springsteen, opening for Bruce Hornsby or at the historic Irving Theater. Her music is described as 'urban folk,' and she follows in the family footsteps as a powerful songwriter - mom, Sandy wrote the words to dad, Harry's most poignant song, "Cat's in the Cradle." She is also an activist, mother and educator. What more could you ask for in an artist?
The delightful trio, Tonos Triad opens.

Record Store Day
Saturday, April 16, 2011
I will have a complete guide to Record Store Day, Broad Ripple style in the next issue, but I wanted to remind you not to make any other plans for that day. The day is family-friendly and the route between stores is walkable. Start rolling the change from your dresser top and car ashtray now; there will be lots of special Record Store Day releases.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
