Buzzing Around Town

Saturday, February 19, 2011
It's not often that so many great events are happening on the same evening. Mark your calendar, get a babysitter, and pick a show.

Lowercase m
Saturday, February 19, 2011
Noble Coffee & Tea Co. - 933 Logan St. - Noblesville, IN
7:00, all-ages, non-smoking, $5.
The band, Lowercase m, features some of my favorite people - Broad Ripple's coolest husband and wife team, Evan Finch and Grace Blanchard join Brett Cantrell in dusting off Lowercase m. The band was the darling of coffeehouses and bars in the early '90s. The band features a fun mix of country, folk, gorgeous voices and humor.
Blue Stone Folk School is hosting the show in the delightful Noble Coffee & Tea located in charming downtown Noblesville. They serve beer, wine, and sweets in addition to coffee and tea.

Truth and Salvage Company with Chad Mills
Saturday, February 19, 2011
Radio Radio - 1119 Prospect Street
doors 8:00, 21+, non-smoking, $10
I love the story of how Truth & Salvage Company formed, especially since it involves Indianapolis' own Tim Jones. He was the talent booker at Hollywood's famous Hotel Café and through casual late-night jam sessions they quickly discovered that they had heaps of band chemistry. It was there that Truth and Salvage was born.
The six-member band features four singer/songwriters, and they all have stories to tell. Their sound is a mix of rock, country and alternative with harmonies, badass guitar playing and good old fun evident in every song.
The last time I saw them play I was grinning and tapping my toes that whole time.
Broad Ripple's own Chad Mills is opening the show, and I heartily approve. Presale tickets are moving fast - and they're only $8 if purchased in advance.

Alice Chalmers ATSACIYJB with The Peach Pickers
Saturday, February 19, 2011
Otterbein Community Concert Series
2901 W 200 N, Greenfield, IN - 7:00, all-ages, non-smoking
The Otterbein Community Concert Series presents acoustic music in an intimate, historic atmosphere. The series features the finest in acoustic, folk, bluegrass, and Americana music. The concerts are held at the Otterbein United Methodist Church, a beautifully restored, turn of the century church.
This year's series is opening with Alice Chalmers and the Stick a Cork in Your Jug Band with The Peach Pickers. The Peach Pickers bluegrass group is from Muncie.
In case you don't know, I'm a part of Alice Chalmers ATSACIYJB. We started with the desire to play at the Indiana State Fair - and we really wanted to play at the State Fair! We soon discovered that we were actually a great band. Gorgeous harmonies, beautiful music, creative instrumentation and happy giggling soon poured from the summer evening rehearsals.
The band features Cara Jean Wahlers (vocals, guitar), Holly Smith (vocals, violin), Jude Odell (vocals, banjo, guitar), Stasia Demos (vocals, accordion, guitar), Joni Back-Bubenzer (vocals, ukulele), Tammy Lieber (washtub bass) and Nora Spitznogle (typewriter - that's me!)
The shows are always big fun. And don't be surprised if you leave with a sprinkling of glitter. We like glitter!

Manic Monday
Monday, February 21, 2011
The Rock Lobster - 820 Broad Ripple Avenue - 21+, 10:00
Monday always seems pretty darn manic to me. You can make it official on every third Monday of the month. In this case Manic Monday features '80s music - punk, new wave, surf and goth and the theme is: Pretty in Pink.
The show is hosted by DJs A-Squared Industries and DJ Action Jackson with special guests Kallioni and Rachel Rubes. They will be celebrating the birthday of Naptown Roller Girl, Dora the Destroyer.
It sounds like a great way to jump into the week. There will be drink specials, prizes for the best dressed and lots of other fun.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
