Cari Ray & The Loaners
Saturday, February 5, 2011
Locals Only Art & Music Pub - 2449 E. 56th St - 8pm, 21+,
Cari Ray & The Loaners have been on a tour of the southwest and they are sure to have some good tour stories to tell at their Locals Only show - and Cari is a wonderful storyteller. Her songs are beautiful short stories wrapped in gorgeous music.
Cari's record, Always On, made several top ten lists for best album for good reason. It is wonderful! Come and see what all of the fuss is about.
A little story about Locals Only: My dad has been in Locals Only a couple of times. Last week we were talking about how much I love the ring toss game and I mentioned that Locals Only had one. Dad commented that he thinks, "that place is weird." Sometimes I think it's a bonus when your parents don't enjoy the same places that you do, but I decided to dig deeper. I finally got out of him that it seems like the place "is all about watching the bands." So, according to Papa John Spitznogle, LOAMP is a great place to hear music. . . .compared to the Whitestown Legion, anyway.

Chad Mills - Redbud House Concert Series
January 16, 2011
Have you ever been to a house concert? It's just that - a concert in someone's house. I love them - everyone is there to listen - no bar chatter or blenders whirling drinks or freakishly tall people standing in front of the stage. And the musicians have time to tell stories and talk about their songs. I took my Mom to her first house concert to see one of my favorite musicians, Chad Mills, play the Redbud House Concert Series.
I'm a big fan of Chad's - not only do I think that he's a great songwriter and I've enjoyed seeing him grow and stretch his wings in the last five years, but Chad is an outstanding member of our music community. He plays early morning farmer's markets, charity events, and is generous with his time. He seems to manage the balance of home, work and family.

I've heard musicians say that they feel naked playing a house concert. There is no microphone or equipment or smoky haze to hide behind. As an audience member, I felt stripped down also - no notepad or camera or speaker to shield me from the music. That is what makes house concerts so great; you really have a chance to connect with the words and music.
As many times as I've heard Chad play and listened to his albums, I heard the songs differently sitting just a few feet away from him. It was interesting to hear Chad's mom requesting songs, and hearing mine appreciate his music.
I encourage you to attend or host a concert. It's as easy as pie. Speaking of pie, house concerts usually involve a pitch-in and time to meet the other concertgoers.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
