RICK'S TOP 20 FAVORITES FOR 2010 - part two

1. BLACK KEYS-BROTHERS
The strongest blues-rock album in many a year, with everything from gritty guitars to whistled melodies, all with fantastically inventive drumming. No other record made it to my "turntable" more often this year.

2. BAND OF HORSES-INFINITE ARMS
Magnificent massed harmonies highlight this album of rock nuggets with strong country flavorings.

3. TRAMPLED BY TURTLES-PALOMINO
A fresh and rowdy bluegrass record by a group of Minnesota youngsters. The speed of the songs suggest that they are influenced as much by punk as by Bill Monroe, a winning combination if there ever was one.

4. FRIGHTENED RABBIT-WINTER OF MIXED DRINKS
Startlingly good collection of indie-rock that mixes in everything but the kitchen sink.

5. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN-THE PROMISE
A "great lost Springsteen album" filled with 21 songs written after Born To Run but not used for Darkness On The Edge Of Town because they were all too upbeat. Yes, an upbeat Springsteen album with songs written during his prime is just as great as you might imagine.

6. SUFJAN STEVENS-AGE OF ADZ
Less immediately inviting than most of his previous work, Stevens takes a slightly electronic turn, and piles on the effects, but still comes through with great songs and fantastic melodies.

7. KANYE WEST-MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY
He may be a jerk, but he is one immensely talented jerk. This represents a career peak.

8. TROMBONE SHORTY-BACKATOWN
New Orleans, rhythm & blues, jazz, hip-hop, rock, Trombone Shorty incorporates them all into a groove laden good time.

9. ROBERT PLANT-BAND OF JOY
How is it that an aging English rocker has become one of our best country-blues singers? Throw in some very high quality indie-rock covers, and you have a great, varied listen.

10. VARIOUS ARTISTS-THE T.A.M.I. SHOW DVD
One of the best rock movies ever made finally gets its DVD release. Contains the finest filmed performance of James Brown, as well as a fantastic 1965-era Rolling Stones sequence, and multiple knockout numbers from Marvin Gaye, the Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, the Supremes, Smokey Robinson, and on and on.
