Tommy Mullinix Tribute
Sunday, January 23, 2011
The Jazz Kitchen - 5377 N. College Ave
317-253-4900 - doors 1:30, show 2:00 - 5:00
Tommy Mullinix was active in the Indianapolis music scene for more than 20 years, both as a musician and bandleader (Naptown Strutters) and club owner (Jam Cellar at Union Station). Tommy died last month in Florida. His jazz family is planning a tribute show at the Jazz Kitchen.
Musicians and friends are invited to celebrate Tommy's life with a pitch-in (the bar will be open) and music.

Cameron McGill & What Army and Noah East
Wednesday, January 26, 2011
White Rabbit Cabaret
1116 Prospect Street - 317-686-9550
Doors 8:00, show 9:00, $7 advance, $10 day of show
Presale tickets available at Luna Music, Indy CD & Vinyl
I was first introduced to Cameron McGill and his excellent music by Josh Baker at a Midwest Music Summit show. As I listened to Cameron's set at the Monkey's Tale and was immediately smitten with his smart songs and great voice.
Chicago-based Cameron has made practically made Indianapolis his second home between tours. He's going to be playing my favorite kind of show - one solo set and followed by one with his band, What Army (isn't that the greatest band name ever?). Indy's own singer-songwriter, Noah East will open the concert.

Rivoli Revue
Friday, January 28, 2011
Athenaeum
401 E. Michigan Street
7:00 show, doors 6:15, all-ages, nonsmoking, $25
The Rivoli Theater on East 10th Street was built in 1927 (Broad Ripple's Vogue Theater was built in 1938) and was a movie theater until 1992 with some live concerts thrown in between. Since the theater closed several groups have worked hard to renovate and reopen the venue.
In the spirit of helping keep the lights on at the Rivoli Center for the Performing Arts, several groups are donating their time for the Rivoli Revue. The lineup is stellar! Burlesque troupe, Crème De Les Femes and belly dancers, Belly Belly will perform.
The fabulous duo, Patchwork will provide the musical portion of the revue. It promises to be a wonderful evening for a good cause. I'll see you there!

Yo La Tengo
Thursday, February 3
Vogue Theatre, 2011
6259 N. College Ave - 317-259-7029
Doors 7:00, show 8:00, nonsmoking, 21+, $17
Yay! Yo La Tengo is coming! Yo La Tengo is coming! I truly adore the New Jersey-based indie band. I'm one of the people in the crowd that has been staring at them adoringly since the late 1980s. They always put on an awesome show - last time I saw them at the Vogue they totally blew my mind by covering a song by Indiana's own punkish-rock band, Dow Jones and the Industrials. In fact the band is known for their encyclopedic knowledge of cover songs.
The trio has an ardent fan base who just can't believe that their beloved band is not a household name. The show promises to big indie fun!

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
