RICK'S TOP 20 FAVORITES FOR 2010 - part one

11. SHARON JONES AND THE DAP KINGS-I LEARNED THE HARD WAY
Great funk and soul in the James Brown tradition, with a seasoned veteran at the helm and a crackerjack band in support.

12. VARIOUS ARTISTS-BEST OF SOUL TRAIN DVD
As great as you would expect, with Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ohio Players, and every other major funk/soul player present and accounted for. Even the disco numbers are great, and then there's the added bonus of the Soul Train dancers.

13. JONSI-GO
Solo effort by Sigur Ros' lead singer and guitarist continues in the vein of his group but with a slightly more upbeat and less cluttered feel. Superb, as is nearly everything this group touches.

14. RICHARD THOMPSON-DREAM ATTIC
His umpteenth solo studio album, this makes the list due to Thompson's tremendous electric guitar solos sprinkled throughout.

15. PHANTOGRAM-EYELID MOVIES
Very spare, very subdued, as the album title suggests the soft, yet always active songs and melodies.

16. ARCADE FIRE-SUBURBS
This extremely talented indie-rock collective filled Madison Square Garden on the heels of this album, containing as it does anthemic fist-pumpers, melodic "cell-phone wavers" (it used to be cigarette lighters in the old days), and just straight- out rocking good tunes.

17. SURFER BLOOD-ASTRO COAST
Insanely catchy melodic rock with lots of power and punch.

18. NEIL YOUNG-LE NOISE
Just Neil and his (primarily electric) guitars. Sounds like an album he would have made with Crazy Horse 30 years ago (indeed, some of the songs were written this long ago), but without the band. Fantastically inventive, and some of his best lyrics in years.

19. JENNY & JOHNNY-I'M HAVING FUN NOW
Boy-girl melodic rock of the highest order. I can't get these songs out of my head.

20. TRACEY THORN-LOVE AND IT'S OPPOSITE
Everything But The Girl member writes an album of gorgeous, very sad "love" songs with grown-up lyrics. Unforgettable once you give it a close listen.
