Right in my Own Backyard - 'Oh, The Weather Outside Is. . . ' - by Brandt Carter

'Oh, The Weather Outside Is. . . '
When you're at a loss for words, you can always talk about the weather. Having grown up in Indianapolis, I also know the adage, "One thing certain in Indiana, just wait an hour or two, and the weather will change."
We are blessed because the four seasons inspire lots of talking, rhyming, predicting, and writing. This year, as in previous years, I will anticipate what the days hold by stepping out in my backyard and looking upward. The Farmer's Almanac is another of my favorite guides. I also cruise the National Weather Service and AccuWeather forecast for 2010-2011. Guess what? Winter is sure to bring snow and cold. We can also compare and complain as weather records have been kept since 1871.

Paul Poteet's blog share provides snowfall records. We will have to keep track to see how this year stacks up. AccuWeather provides a quick projection of what's ahead in our part of the country. I'm a little skittish when it comes to anticipating what "Wintry Battle Zone" means.
In spite of all the history and predictions, I never cease simply to look forward to season's first snowfall. I also can't wait to hear the forecasts on whether Santa can expect to deliver his presents with the help of snow. I'm content when a January blizzard confines us to sitting and reading in front of the fireplace. I'm disgruntled when March decides to unload snow drifts once I've grown tired of winter and can't wait for spring.
To quote a famous Hoosier, "Don't knock the weather; nine-tenths of the people couldn't start a conversation if it didn't change once in a while" ~Kin Hubbard. Weather is an easy exchange that builds conversational bridges. It often frames our thoughts and the beginning and end of days. Yes, it's the backdrop of our lives.
