Gettin' Ripped in Ripple - Non-Scale Victories: The Best Kind! - by Laura Minor

Non-Scale Victories: The Best Kind!

Bragging...this word is most often looked at in a negative way. Boasting...maybe not as looked down upon, but it still seems to hold an air of arrogance. While I do not think that it is good to go around constantly tooting your own horn, I feel that if one accomplishes something they have worked hard toward, that they should not feel bad about sharing their good news with others.
No surprise that most people who work with a trainer or exercise on a regular basis are seeking to see a lower number on the scale. And at times, to their dismay, they may not get just that. However, being "fit" does always equate to weighing less. In fact, many studies have shown that those who are looking primarily for that will tend to abandon a workout program if they do not get these results quickly. Fitness is SO much more than what the scale tells you. So many wonderful things happen during your journey to better health that have nothing to do with that bathroom scale. In fact, that number is only the tip of a very big iceberg. People would be better off and more likely to stick with their wellness programs if they celebrated the vast number of "non-scale victories" associated with regular exercise and a healthy diet.
If you have been at it for awhile, below are a few reminders of how far you have come. Maybe they do all ALL apply to you, but I am sure you can relate to some. If you are not currently in an exercise program but would like to begin, write down several reasons why you would like to get going other than weight-loss focused. Maybe it is for more energy, better balance, increased endurance...or to finish your first 5K. Then, when you feel like you are at a plateau, revisit that list and see how much has positively changed in your life due to physical activity. Trust me, you will be pleasantly surprised!

-Think back to the beginning when you just started out. Remember when those 5 pounds weights felt like a ton and now you are using 10 pounds with no problem? You have gained muscle tone!
-Remember the first time that you were able to do something with ease that you used to struggle with? I do. Pulling myself quickly out of a lake onto the deck followed by my friends needing me to help pull them out was the first time I realized how far I had come with my strength. It felt great!
-When people compliment you on how great you look or your toned arms, don't shy away and down play it. They paid you that compliment for a reason so reply with a proud "Thanks, I have been working hard and feel great!"
-What about those jeans you haven't been able to wear for 2 years? Maybe the scale hasn't budged much but your shape surely has and that is due to increased muscle tone and less body fat.
-Didn't it feel great to cross that finish line with a smile on your face and feeling strong? Maybe you are not happy with the way your butt looks all the time, but your butt carried you across that line so thank it!
-If you are in a workout class or running group, think of all of the interesting people you have met and friendships you developed while exercising. You may not have come as far without them!
-Realize how many new, healthy and delicious foods you have discovered in changing your diet. Now you actually crave foods that nourish your body. I have had many people tell me how sick they felt if they happen to fall off and have a greasy, junk food meal that they used eat regularly.
-When you had your yearly check up, did your doctor praise you for lowering your cholesterol, blood pressure and triglycerides? If so, it felt great I am sure!
-Appreciate the less stress and better sleep that exercise and a healthy diet provide.

These are just a few of hundreds of non-scale victories that you may experience due to your hard work and dedication. Even if the pounds do not fly off as fast as you would like, I promise that if you stick with it you will not be sorry, as I guarantee it will make you feel better, and who doesn't want that?
Have you ever missed a workout and wished you hadn't? "Yes." Have you ever finished a workout and wished you hadn't? "No." I have asked this question to hundreds of clients over the years and I have yet to hear different responses to both questions; so tell yourself that when you are struggling to get off the coach.
Go ahead, brag and boast about your accomplishments especially when they are not only about weight loss. In fact, I will end by bragging about myself and my fabulous trainers. So.Be.Fit. was awarded #1 for Personal Trainers in Indianapolis on the A-List! Thanks to my awesome trainers and clients...we could have never done it without you!
