Gettin' Ripped in Ripple - Who's the "Fair-est" of Them All? - by Laura Minor

Who's the "Fair-est" of Them All?

Ahhh...the Indiana State Fair. The Ferris Wheel, the World's Largest Pig, hot air balloon races, the craft and knitting contests, the variety of entertainment, the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Burger. What? A burger and a donut? Yes, you did read correctly. Every year, I wonder "How can anyone possibly make anything more fat-, grease-, and calorie-laden than fried butter, fried cookie dough or chocolate covered bacon?" Well folks, this one certainly answers my question.
Instead of a normal everyday hamburger bun, the Doughnut Burger uses an entire Krispy Kreme Donut on top and on bottom of the beef patty. But wait there's more!! You can also add a fried egg, bacon and cheese on top...hey why not? I know, I know, I seem like a big party pooper. Don't get me wrong, I love some sweet and grease from time to time, and I allow myself them since I know I will fit in plenty of exercise in the next week. But REALLY? Is this something that even remotely seems like a good option? In a state that continuously struggles to be out of the top 5 in obesity levels, I think it is a bit much. Ironically, the booth was just steps away from the "InShape Indiana" tent.
This burger has become such a draw for the lovers and haters that they even have a window by the grill so that people can watch the burger cooking with one donut resting on top. I admit, I watched too. Kind of like when you can't resist to look at an accident scene. It was kind of interesting seeing a group of people looking in the window saying "How disgusting!" next to those in line anxiously awaiting their 1800 calorie burger. Yep, 1800 calories (and I must say I think this may be one the low side...maybe minus the egg bacon and cheese).
I thought it would be interesting to share how much time certain activities would take to burn that many calories. For the average 150 pound person it would take:

2hr. 40min of swimming
6hr. 15min of walking
2hr. 20min of running
3hr. 20min of biking
5hr. of step aerobics
3hr. 7min of rollerskating

Unless one is training for a very long event, or obsessively motivated, I doubt very many people would be doing these activities for these time periods. By the time this article comes out, the Doughnut Burger booth will be close to shutting down. Hopefully if you had one, you shared it with a few others!
