Water main repairs along College bridge
posted: Jul. 23, 2010
Veolia Water Indianapolis, the day-to-day operator of Indianapolis Water, is making temporary repairs to a broken 16" main that carries drinking water underneath the White River at College Avenue. The temporary repair will affect pedestrian and bicycle traffic on the east sidewalk of the College Avenue bridge over White River. What will be done to protect water quality and to continue to provide adequate water pressure needed in the event of a fire, a temporary water main will be laid on top of the bridge, connecting to the existing water main on either end of the bridge. The temporary water line will remain out of the flow of traffic, but will occupy the sidewalk on the east side of College Avenue over White River. Temporary signage will be in place north and south of the bridge alerting pedestrians and bicyclists of the sidewalk restriction. The sidewalk on the west side of College Avenue over White River remains open to foot and bicycle traffic. Work is set to begin on or after Wednesday, July 21, 2010.
Plans for a permanent solution A permanent solution to repair the damaged main is being designed and will need the approval of the Department of Waterworks before construction can begin. It is estimated that construction on the permanent solution could begin in Fall or Winter 2010, pending necessary approvals.
