Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith

Howling at the Moon header

Aloha! Having just returned from the perfect vacation, I write with random thoughts. Hawaii is definitely something to put on your "bucket list". You know. . . .things to do before you kick the bucket. Thank you to David Clingan who covered for me last issue. David is a customer of mine and is a foster for Love of Labs Rescue. I often pass him on the street walking his dogs and have heard many stories. If any of you are fosters or in pet related areas and would like to share news or stories please contact me.
I would imagine that some of you have had some pretty upset pets lately what with all the thunderstorms. The house where I grew up on Winthrop had an old claw foot bathtub. My good sized dog, Prince, used to be so scared of thunder that he would squeeze and hide behind it. Next up will be July 4th and fireworks. There are herbal calming remedies available and they do work (we have them at our store). There was a scary storm Tuesday night, June 15th that caused havoc in my neighborhood. A tree was felled by lightening into 52nd Street between Central and Washington Blvd. It took down the power lines and blew up the transformer. Fire was everywhere. The utility pole burned and the lines on the street were on fire. There was so much fire that the street burned up leaving holes where the asphalt gave way. The explosions and noises were terrifying. The electricity was arcing while it was pouring down rain, making for a bad mix. My neighbor, whose dining room faces 52nd street, said she saw the lines come down on a passing car. The car kept going and made it through. It scared her so bad she ran out of the house down the street. She feared things would blow up. This is a great neighborhood, so in true party spirit we all came together at another neighbor's house and sat on their porch with a bird's eye view to watch all the excitement, all the while enjoying cheese, crackers and any liquid refreshment we could find in the dark. We did not omit our utility workers. We shared brownies and cookies with them. We were without electricity for six hours, phones and Internet for only two days. Those workers did a stellar job. The street was blocked off with police cars and yellow tape wrapped from tree to tree. The tree that fell will be greatly missed. These old, glorious trees are what make our neighborhood so special.

Saturday, June 20th, 2010, two dogs were roaming at 52nd and College. Clearly they had gotten loose because they had collars and one had a broken chain attached. Two people walked them to Paw Patch Place to see if they were chipped, with hopes of returning them to their owner. They were not. Not knowing what to do, the Humane Society was called. The two good Samaritans did not have a car so could not take them. I do not know if they were picked up. Both were medium sized, short haired. One was a chocolate female with swollen teats, either about to deliver or already had. The other was golden with black on his face. They were sweet, obedient dogs. If you or someone you know is looking for them, contact me for more information at 926-3647. I would lean towards calling Animal Control first.
A memory I will always keep from this last vacation is of the two dogs sitting under the table in front of the coffee shop at Waikiki Beach. Their lady was reading the paper. Both dogs were wearing floral leis. Darn! The camera was in the hotel room. Pets make you smile!
