Winners of the 2010 Indiana South District of Optimist International Oratorical Contests were Zain Santamaria, a freshman at Cathedral High School, and Audrey Meyer, a freshman at Lawrence Central High School. The girls and boys contests were held on April 24 at the Hampton Inn in Greensburg, Indiana during the Third Quarterly Conference of the Indiana South District. Zain and Audrey each received $2500 first place scholarships from the Optimist International Foundation. The subject of the winning speeches was "Cyber Communications: Progress or Problem?"
Zain and Audrey advanced to the District finals by first winning the Breakfast Optimist Club of Indianapolis oratorical contests held at Bernie's Place Restaurant in Lawrence Township's McKenzie Center in February. They were then the winners of the boys and girls Optimist Regional oratorical contests held in the Indianapolis Senior Center in March.
The Optimist International oratorical contests were first conducted in 1928. The Breakfast Optimist Club which holds its meetings on Tuesday mornings at Just Judy's Restaurant at 2210 East 54th Street was chartered in 1958. The club conducts the oratorical contests every year.
