Random Rippling - Hogeye Navvy - 25 years at the Aristocrat
posted: Apr. 30, 2010
I recently interviewed two friends and fellow Vietnam war veterans at the Aristocrat Pub at 52nd and College Avenue. Rick Rising-Moore, owner of the Aristocrat, and Terry Bellner, founder of the Celtic group Hogeye Navvy.
"I first time I ever saw Terry play was at Mugwumps," recalled Rick. Mugwumps was a pub at 608 Massachusetts Avenue in the early 1980s. "I was standing up by the plate glass window [listening to the band]. I hear this tapping on the window. I turn around and here is this guy on a horse with full armor and he is pecking the window with a lance with a sign on the end that says 'May I have a Guinness please?'
In 1985 Hogeye Navvy started playing regularly at the Aristocrat. The line-up of the band has changed over the years, but the music is still Celtic music, sea chanties and sailor songs. They currently play every Saturday from 9 to 11pm. There is a $5 cover - well worth it for an evening of great music and 100% home cooked food from the Aristocrat.
