Board election at BRVA annual meeting
by Alan Hague
posted: Oct. 30, 2009

The annual public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) was held on October 20 at the Indianapolis Art Center. About 60 were in attendance. George Hanna of Canal Bistro Mediterranean Grille provided the snacks. The annual meeting is always the last public meeting of the year and is where the election is held for the board of directors. There was one open board seat and another was available as Carolyn Savill completed her term after serving the BRVA board for nine years. For the first time that I can remember, there were more candidates for the board than there were open seats. Four very qualified residents ran in the election: Justin McKeand, Mark Wolf, Christina Scofield, and Leona Glazebrooks. Each was given a few minutes for a presentation and a few questions from the audience. The ballots were cast and taken away for counting.

Next on the agenda was Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) commander Robert Holt. Holt explained that the department has stepped up officer presence in the Village, including uniformed and undercover, on foot and on bikes. Some of the officers patrol "off the strip" to make the neighborhood safer during the late night weekend hours. In August, this coverage broke up a robbery ring that was attacking people as they walked to their cars after leaving nightclubs.

Next, captain Gregg Harris of the Indianapolis Fire Department presented the status of station 32 in Broad Ripple. The first Public Safety Fest, held there this summer, was very successful with over 200 attendees. A park bench was added to the station. Harris invited people to get carry-out lunch in the Village and bring it over to the station to eat.

While there are engines located at nearby stations 6, 16, 21, and 31, Harris said there have been some discussions about bringing back an engine to station 32. A question from the audience asked what residents can do to support bring fire apparatus back to the station. Harris suggested that comments should go through the BRVA and city-county councillor Ryan Vaughn.
Next, Ryan Vaughn answered many questions from the audience about city services. BRVA director Tom Healy and BRVA president Elizabeth Marshall presented the Year in Review and highlights of the BRVA's accomplishments in 2009. Scott Van Kirk of ExpoDesigns announced the first Broad Ripple Lights Up! Parade to be on December 12. The neighborhood parade will go from the high school to the fire station in time for the tree lighting.
