Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen

Life's Ripples header

What is truth? Pilate's question to Jesus during the trial echoes through the centuries. It seems as if truth isn't valued right now in our society. Take for example a famous director being jailed for a crime he'd rather ignore even though he was found guilty of the crime in a court of law. Hollywood says to hold him to a different standard because he directs movies, and after all it happened so long ago. Another example would be a late night talk show host who makes light of very questionable behavior.
Truth is so unvalued right now that people don't believe anything, or the flip side is they believe everything without proof of the information actually being true. In politics that is what they call "putting a spin on it" so no one knows for sure what is true and what isn't.
The one place that truth can be found is in consistent actions over a long period of time. Truth is not one of those instantaneous fixes that we have come to value in our society. Actions and reactions speak more truth about a person than anything they say, and it is those consistent actions and reactions that let you know if a person can be trusted or not.
When looking at the story of Jesus, his actions and reactions were consistent throughout his ministry. He knew what he was here for, and He did not let others distract Him from His purpose. It was not truth that led Him to the cross, it was truth that died on the cross so that we may be redeemed. What is truth for you?
